A well-established budget bakkie option for both commercial and leisure purposes, we explore which is better, the petrol or diesel engine within the GWM Steed 5 range.

When it comes to South Africans, we definitely like our bakkies. Regarding workhorse bakkies, diesel motors are the leaders in the sales charts. Now when it comes to GWM Steed 5 products, the manufacturer did introduce the range with petrol-powered variants. However, since then, the line-up has significantly shrunk, and GWM now exclusively offer the Steed 5 range with diesel motors.

Before we find out if you should go for an older petrol unit or search for new or used GWM Steed 5 models on AutoTrader fitted with a diesel motor. Remember that you can sell your car quickly and easily with our Instant Offer tool found here

Petrol

As mentioned earlier, when the Steed 5 range first made its local appearance in South Africa, customers could choose between petrol- and diesel-powered offerings. However, later the Chinese automaker reduced the line-up to only offer diesel motors. You should still find some petrol variants of the Steed 5 on AutoTrader, and as such, we list the performance figures below.

Diesel

The current range of GWM Steed 5 models solely consists of diesel-powered variants. However, while the entire range provides identical power and torque figures, there is a marginal difference in the claimed average fuel consumption between the rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive derivatives.

Verdict

Having looked at the entire GWM Steed 5 range, including both Workhorse and double cab models, it would appear that those looking for a cheap single or double cab bakkie for their business and aren’t too concerned about safety may see the used petrol models as great value for money.

The diesel models, while more expensive, offer more variety, improved fuel consumption and will prove better to drive, tow and carry things with, thanks to their higher torque figure. Your specific application is the deciding factor in this test, with both products appealing to specific markets.
