Great Wall Motors (GWM) has been in the bakkie market for almost a decade now with its Steed, which, on paper at least, provides an exceptional package for the money. The top-spec Steed 5E used for this comparison retails for R284 900, representing fantastic value for money when looking at the price of double cab bakkies in South Africa.

We will be comparing it with the JMC Vigus 5 and the JAC T6, the Steeds direct competitors in the entry-level bakkie segment which has come a long way in terms of quality since these brands frist stared to compete in the segment.

The Steed 5 2.0VGT Double Cab Xscape

The GWM Steed 5 features a design that leans towards that of being somewhat neutral. It is not overly done with sharp angles and big menacing bumpers, instead the vehicle comes across as neat and well designed. The Steed 5E gets side-steps, a rear roll-bar and mag rims. The interior however is where it really impresses with an interior quality no worse than an entry-level Isuzu D-Max while offering a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. There is also reasonable space and an acceptable ride quality which adds to the assumption that you are not in something that is going to fall apart.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine which produces around 105kW and 305Nm of torque. While frugal the motor suffers from turbo lag which is not helped by the gear ratios of the six-speed manual gearbox which require you to remain above 2000rpm to make use of the power effectively. Despite the lazy engine, the GWM Steed 5E offers exceptional value at a price of around R284 900.

What about the competition?

JMC Vigus 5 4x2 LX

Unlike the subtle design of the GWM, the JMC demands attention with an eye-catching design. The Vigus also has a more SUV like stance, flared arches and sedan type crease lines, a bit too brash for some but ideal for those who want a modern looking bakkie. One of the biggest style elements has to be the front end which will force any right lane sitter to move over. Under the skin, the JMC features parts from Borg Warner, Getrag, Bosch, Honeywell, Valeo, ZF and Denso which are some of the best names in the business.

The JMC is powered by a Ford derived PUMA 2.4l turbo engine delivering 103kW and 310Nm mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. You also get four-wheel disc brakes, ABS and EBD. While slightly more expensive than the GWM, at R317 990, the JMC does seem to feature a host of top-rated elements.

JAC T6

Like the GWM Steed 5E, the JAC T6 offers a subtle design and although neat it does come across as being slightly aged now when compared to the JMC offering. Up front is a bold grille with a large JAC logo flanked by neat headlights. The interior is also visually appealing with a clutter free facia, it, like that of the JMC looks modern and also features a large touch screen infotainment system that also features a reverse camera. The system accepts USB input as well as Bluetooth connection and the steering wheel features controls for basic infotainment functions.

Under the hood of the JAC you will find a 1.9-litre turbo diesel which develops 100kW and 320Nm which is impressive considering the fact that this motor offers more torque than the other two yet is smaller in capacity. The JAC also features the latest Bosch ABS and EBD system. Prices start from R299 900.

Verdict

After crunching the numbers, looking at the stats our winner has to be the JMC Vigus 5. Yes, it does cost more than the other two but when you add in the quality of the under pining’s, its warranty and service period and increased ground clearance the JMC makes the most sense. That said though, the GWM and JAC are both worthy of your attention within this segment as both offer impressive stats at reasonable price points.
