SVI Engineering, a company popular for bulletproofing popular SUVs and bakkies, launched a sister company, Ulterio Motiv, in 2022. The latter specialises in six-wheel conversions on Toyota Land Cruiser 79 bakkies; however, now it offers customers the opportunity to have a 6x4 conversion done on a Ford Ranger.

Ulterio Motiv extends the standard Ford chassis to convert the Ford Ranger to a 6x4. After the extension, the company added a third axle that was not driven but only load-carrying. However, this axle benefits from ABS brakes that work with Ford's ABS. So you might ask, what is the benefit of the third axle if it is not driven?

The answer to that question is that it carries additional load. This third axle carries around 40% of the rear mass, while the driven axle does 60%. This means the conversion increases carrying capacity, a total payload of 2 000kg depending on the model. Yes, this conversion is available for the single-, extended or double-cab variants.

Ultimately, the conversion offers multiple opportunities for customers as they can have their loading bin or closed canopy created. Alternatively, customers can have Ulterio Motiv manufacture a custom drop-side load bin with interior dimensions measuring 1.6 m wide and 2.5 m long, as shown in the pictures.

Ford Ranger 6x4 price and build time

The conversion cost is R265 000, excluding VAT, and doesn't include the base vehicle, drop-side load bin, or any additional optional extras. Note that this price was correct when writing this article; however, it can change anytime and without notice. The build time depends on the extras or whether you take the load bin, but the chassis conversion alone should take six weeks.
