South African Formula 1 fan had long awaited the return of live races since 1993 when the last Grand Prix was hosted at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Generations of fans once flocked to this iconic track, cheering for their favourite drivers, but for over two decades, their enthusiasm has been confined to watching on TV screens.

Exciting developments have reignited hope, though. In September, Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie met Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to discuss bringing the sport back to South Africa. McKenzie confirmed that the country is "one step closer" to seeing Formula 1’s return. He also met FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who supported South Africa’s F1 ambitions.

Kyalami Upgrades

Recognizing the need to meet the highest standards, Kyalami has teamed up with the motorsport engineering consultancy Apex Circuit Design. This award-winning company is preparing a roadmap for Kyalami to achieve FIA Grade 1 accreditation, a crucial requirement for hosting modern Formula 1 races. Apex, known for creating some of the world’s top circuits, is working with Kyalami to restore the venue’s standing as a world-class location for motor racing events. This is believed to equate to an R177 million investment in the circuit and surrounding areas, with access roads, spectator seating, and TecPro barriers being only some of the required upgrades to meet Formula 1's high standards.

Kyalami and Apex recently presented their accreditation plans to Minister McKenzie, who expressed gratitude to Kyalami Circuit owner Toby Venter. McKenzie praised Venter’s continued commitment to enhancing South Africa’s status as a premier motorsport destination. The minister also thanked Gauteng Premier Lesufi for his support, noting the government’s dedication to creating a “suitable and realistic solution” for South Africa’s F1 return.

As negotiations continue with key stakeholders, including F1 owners Liberty Media, the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit is gearing up to make a strong case for being Formula 1’s next African home. With each step taken by the Kyalami management and South Africa’s leadership, the dream of hearing Formula 1 engines roar through Kyalami again moves closer to becoming a reality.
