What is the cheapest GWM Tank 500 you can buy?

There is only one model of GWM Tank 500 available for garage parking. Here's how much you'll pay for one.

The GWM Tank 500 HEV SUV is a real head-turner featuring a powerful engine, luxurious interior, and impressive off-road capabilities. However, it’s not cheap, and there is only one model available in South Africa at the moment, the 2.0T HEV Ultra Luxury 4x4, which has a hefty price tag of R1,222,900 at the time of writing this article.

Is there a more affordable option coming?

GWM says it plans to bring a diesel model to SA, but we're not exactly sure when.

To check out exactly what you're getting for your money in the HEV variant (and it's a whole lot), look at the Tank 500 spec sheet here.

What are good GWM Tank 500 alternatives?

If you're serious about off-roading, the more established brands offer a range of seven-seaters. The Ford Everest is a great option, especially in Wildtrak and Platinum trim. (Find out if the Tank 500 is good for long drives, here.)

Also consider the new Toyota Prado, which is slightly more expensive, but you can always opt for a used model.

We recently did a shootout between the Tank 500, Ford Everest and Toyota Prado; read it here.

We also love the Hyundai Palisade, a more city-orientated luxury SUV, and I personally love the Kia Sorento.

Verdict

Unfortunately, as of now, there's no cheaper version of this top-of-the-line model in SA. So, if you're interested in a GWM Tank, you’re looking at a significant investment.

We will update this article once the diesel model becomes available.
