The body-on-frame construction means that the B40 Plus is serious about off-road, but any true off-road enthusiast will tell you that the running gear is only one part of the equation. A well-designed and healthy engine is also required to complete the package. So, is the BAIC B40 Plus a petrol or a diesel, and what engines are on offer?

BAIC B40 Plus engine options

The B40 Plus has a petrol and a diesel engine, allowing you to choose the powerplant that best suits your intended usage. Both are 2.0-litre turbocharged units. 

BAIC B40 Plus Petrol

The 2.0-litre petrol engine benefits from a turbocharger, delivering a final output of 160kW at 5 500 r/min and torque peaking at 320Nm from 1 750 to 4 500 r/min. BAIC says the petrol engine can expect fuel consumption figures of 10 L/100 km.

This engine is mated to either a 6-speed automatic or the 8-speed automatic, a recent addition to the range, in the City Hunter or Champion trim.

BAIC B40 Plus Diesel

The alternative to the petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. This unit produces 110kW at 4 000 r/min and 350Nm from 1 800 r/min to 2 800 r/min. It is only paired with the 6-speed automatic gearbox, and BAIC claims a combined cycle fuel consumption of 8.5 L/100 km.
