While performance may not be the be-all and end-all when considering a V-Class, you'll want to ensure that it's still up to hauling you and your tribe without breaking too much of a sweat. So, let's take a closer look at how the Mercedes-Benz V-Class performs.

Powertrain

Only one V-Class model is currently available: the V300d Exclusive. Despite its name, this model is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine with a true displacement of 1 950 cc.

Power is rated at 174 kW at 4 200 RPM, while the torque peaks at 500 Nm, spanning a 1 600 to 2 400 RPM band. The V-Class is not small, though, and carries a kerb weight of 2 145 kg. This combination means that the V-Class is good for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h.

This drive is sent to the rear wheels only through a 9-speed, 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, allowing the V300d to tow up to 750 kg unbraked, and 2 000 kg braked.

Fuel consumption

There's no point in creating a comfortable long-haul cruiser if it can't go the distance on a fuel tank. The V300d has a claimed combined cycle fuel consumption of 7.0 L/100 km and is fitted with a 70-litre fuel tank. This gives you a theoretical range of 1 000 km from a single tank.

The approach angle is 14.1o, and the departure angle is 13.6o. It has a breakover angle of 11.5o.
