South Africa Petrol & Diesel Update: Relief Expected for July 2026

South African motorists can look forward to a breather at the pumps this July. If you’ve been dreading the upcoming return of the General Fuel Levy, we have some fantastic news: plummeting global oil prices are set to completely wipe out the tax hikes, bringing a significant drop in both petrol and diesel prices.

Here is everything you need to know about what you’ll be paying for fuel from Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

Oil vs. Taxes

To understand July’s prices, we have to look at two competing forces that drove the market this month:

  1. Tax is back

The National Treasury’s temporary fuel levy relief is officially expiring. This means the final 50% of the General Fuel Levy (GFL) is being reintroduced, adding R1.50 per litre to petrol and R1.96 per litre to diesel.

  2. Oil has dropped

Fortunately for our wallets, global crude oil prices have taken a massive dive. Following major diplomatic breakthroughs and the full reopening of the critical Strait of Hormuz, Brent Crude has dropped significantly, hovering between $72.50 and $74.70 per barrel. At the same time, the Rand has held steady against the US Dollar (trading around R16.51 – R16.60).

Because international oil prices dropped so sharply, South Africa accumulated massive "over-recoveries" (savings). These savings are so large that they completely offset the tax hikes and still leave plenty of room for a price cut.

Expected July 2026 fuel prices (inland)

According to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), here are the projected price drops and what you can expect to pay at the pumps:

Fuel TypeCurrent Price (June)Expected dropEst. July Price (Inland)
Petrol 93R27.95 / LDown by ~R1.44 to R1.51~R26.44 / L
Petrol 95R28.06 / LDown by ~R1.40 to R1.47~R26.59 / L
Diesel 500ppm R27.92 / LDown by ~R2.61 to R2.68~R25.24 / L
Diesel 50ppm R28.75 / LDown by ~R3.01 to R3.11~R25.64 / L

Note: Diesel users are walking away with the biggest win this month, with premium 50ppm diesel expected to drop by up to R3.11 per litre! Illuminating Paraffin is also set for a massive wholesale reduction of between R2.45 and R5.13 per litre.

The bottom line

While the return of the full General Fuel Levy is a bitter pill to swallow, external market forces have swung heavily in favour of South African consumers.

Keep in mind that these figures are calculated based on mid-to-late June market data. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) will announce the finalised official adjustments just days before they take effect on the first Wednesday of the month.
