From fully autonomous border crossings to clever range extenders, the seven finalists span autonomy, electrification, data, and manufacturing transformation – and they signal a leap in how trucks are built, powered, and operated. Here are the finalists, in no particular order:

Einride: Crossing borders without a driver

Swedish technology company Einride achieved what many thought was years away: a fully autonomous, cabless electric truck successfully completing an international border crossing and customs clearance – without any human intervention.

This world-first marks a genuine shift in both technical and regulatory terms. Moving freight across borders demands coordination with multiple authorities, differing safety regimes, and complex documentation. By navigating this autonomously, Einride demonstrated not only the reliability of its systems but also growing institutional acceptance of driverless operations. It’s a practical and political breakthrough, not just a technical one – and a defining moment for commercial autonomy.

Aurora Driver: Commercial driverless freight at scale

Where Einride shows the frontier of autonomy, Aurora shows scale. Its Aurora Horizon system began fully driverless commercial freight operations on public highways in Texas in 2025 – making it one of the first companies to remove safety drivers from real-world, revenue-earning routes.

Backed by OEM partners – including PACCAR and Volvo – and supply chain alliances with Continental and Nvidia, Aurora is positioning driverless trucking not as a pilot but as a production reality. Its challenge now is to expand geography and volume while maintaining safety and reliability.

Volvo VNL Autonomous: The OEM integration benchmark

Volvo Trucks has taken a different route to autonomy – building it in from the start. The new Volvo VNL Autonomous platform is not a retrofit or a tech-stack add-on. It’s the first ground-up OEM-engineered autonomous truck platform, designed for long-haul Level-4 operations with fully redundant steering, braking, and power systems.

That integration matters. Autonomous operation at fleet scale depends not just on sensors and software but on maintainability, service networks, and consistent quality. Volvo’s approach aligns safety, design, and manufacturing under one roof, signalling how autonomy will eventually move from bespoke trials to standardised production.

Torc Robotics and Daimler Truck: Production-ready foundations

Torc Robotics, Daimler Truck’s autonomous subsidiary, continues to build toward series production through deep integration with the Freightliner Cascadia platform. The trucks are “autonomous-ready”, with redundant control systems and software tuned for North American highways.

While Torc hasn’t yet reached the same driverless-operation milestone as Aurora, its OEM lineage is strategically significant. Daimler’s control of both vehicle hardware and software validation processes could make it a strong contender once regulatory clarity and operational readiness align. Torc’s progress reflects how incumbents are industrialising autonomy from the inside out.

Scania and DHL: Extending electric range

The Scania DHL Range Extender Project offers a refreshing dose of realism amid the hype. The extended-range electric truck (EREV) combines a battery-electric drivetrain with a small on-board generator for occasional recharging.

In early 100-day trials, the generator ran during only about 8% of the total distance driven – but enabled a CO₂ reduction of more than 90% compared with conventional diesel. The project acknowledges that infrastructure gaps and duty-cycle variability remain hurdles for full electrification. Rather than waiting for perfection, Scania and DHL are engineering practical solutions that work within existing logistics frameworks – a form of innovation grounded firmly in the real world.

Accelera by Cummins: Building the battery supply chain

Accelera by Cummins, working with Daimler Truck and PACCAR, takes innovation off the road and into the factory. Their joint venture, Amplify Cell Technologies, represents a $2–$3 billion investment in localised battery-cell manufacturing for commercial vehicles. Partnering with China’s EVE Energy, the project aims to secure supply chains, cut transport emissions in manufacturing, and create a stable base for zero-emission truck production in North America.

This isn’t a technological breakthrough so much as a strategic one. Without control of the battery value chain, no OEM can scale electrification sustainably. Accelera’s move shows that innovation in trucking now extends beyond vehicles to the industrial ecosystem that supports them.

Bosch Predictive Road Hazard Service: Smarter, safer roads

Bosch rounds out the shortlist with its Predictive Road Hazard Service, part of its wider mobility cloud. The system uses vehicle and infrastructure data to anticipate road surface risks – such as ice, debris, or sudden grip changes – and share those warnings fleet-wide.

While less dramatic than driverless trucks, the service reflects a subtler but essential innovation: collective intelligence. As connectivity deepens, such predictive safety networks could reduce accidents and maintenance costs across mixed fleets, bridging today’s human-driven logistics and tomorrow’s automated ones.

What’s next?

The Truck Innovation Award is judged by the International Truck of the Year jury (Charleen Clarke represents South Africa on the jury). Right now, the jury members are hard at work, examining each entry and casting their votes. The winner will be announced at Solutrans in Lyon, France, on 19 November 2025 – and it will no doubt symbolise the freight sector’s readiness to reinvent itself – not just to move goods, but to move forward.
