The Isuzu mu-X arrived locally in 2018 and although takes shape as a seven-seater SUV, utilise the ladder frame chassis from its D-Max sibling. While the D-Max pick-ups retain their value quite well, we investigate to find out which of the two mu-X trims depreciates the fastest.
The Isuzu mu-X was introduced in 2018 to compete in the highly contested SUV segment. Offered in two derivatives, both come fitted with a 3.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel motor producing 130 kW and 380 Nm of torque. The main difference between the two derivatives happens in the drivetrain where the entry-level model offers motivation to the rear wheels whereas the flagship model comes fitted with a four-wheel-drive system.
Both models also offer similar conveniences on the interior such as the infotainment system which is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as Bluetooth and auxiliary, HDMI and USB inputs. The system can optionally be upgraded to come with a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen for easy use.

The four-wheel-drive model which will set you back R 747 900 if you were to purchase it new today, was introduced to the market in 2018 at a price of R 629 100. Like we did with the entry-level model, we will be comparing the introductory price with used models of the same year to find out what the depreciation is.
While the Isuzu mu-X 3.0 4WD sold for R 629 100, the current combined market value of the model is R 519 900. This means that over the last three years, the model has experienced a depreciation of 17.36%% or R 109 200.
Conclusion
The numbers are clear, the entry-level model experienced more depreciation than its flagship sibling. What does this mean for you? If you are looking for a family SUV to use on your daily commutes to work or to do school runs in, you might want to opt for the non-4WD model as you can expect better pricing. You should note that this model might experience even more depreciation.
