We scoured through the EV offerings available in South Africa at the moment to see which ones offer the best range for your money. EVs at this point average around 400km in our climate, but the claimed ranges are based on the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure), which one could regard as ideal test conditions to match laboratory estimates. With this in mind, according to WLTP, which are the top 10 EVs with the longest range in South Africa currently? Instead of opting for outright performance variants, we looked at all the extended range models in each line-up to give the EVs the best possible chance.

What is WLTP?
The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) is the global standard used to determine the levels of pollutants, CO2 emissions, and fuel consumption of traditional, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
Introduced to replace the outdated NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), the WLTP was designed to provide a more realistic baseline for car buyers. However, while it is significantly more rigorous than its predecessor, it remains a laboratory-based test.
What happens during a WLTP test?
The test is conducted on a chassis dynamometer (a rolling road) in a controlled environment. Unlike older tests, the WLTP uses real-world driving data collected worldwide to create a profile that mimics diverse driving styles.
Key Technical Specs:
Test Cycle: Divided into four parts with different average speeds: Low, Medium, High, and Extra High.
Duration: 30 minutes.
Distance: 23.25 kilometres.
Ambient temperature: Started at 14°C (with figures corrected to 23°C).
Influence of options: Unlike previous tests, WLTP accounts for the mass and aerodynamics of optional equipment (like larger wheels or a sunroof) on a specific car.
WLTP vs. real-world driving
Even though the WLTP is more accurate than previous laboratory standards, there is still a noticeable gap between the "official" numbers and what you see on your dashboard. Here is why they differ:
Environmental Factors
Temperature: WLTP tests are conducted at mild temperatures. In the real world, extreme cold can reduce EV range by up to 30% due to battery chemistry and cabin heating.
Wind & weather: Laboratory tests happen in still air. Headwinds or heavy rain increase aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance.
Driving behavior
The human element: The WLTP follows a specific acceleration curve. Real-world drivers often accelerate more aggressively or maintain higher speeds on motorways than the "Extra High" phase of the test suggests.
Payload: Tests are performed with a standardised load. Carrying four passengers and a roof box full of camping gear will significantly deviate from the WLTP result.
Auxiliary systems
Power drain: During the WLTP test, auxiliary systems like air conditioning, heated seats, and infotainment are typically turned off. In reality, running the A/C on a hot day can increase fuel consumption by 5% to 15%.

Looking at the above, there's an interesting mix of vehicles, but the majority fall into the luxury category, with the most expensive being the Porsche Taycan Turbo and the least expensive being the Dong Feng 007. Though the BMW iX takes the top spot, from our recent experiences driving EVs, their range in real-world conditions is around 400km, give or take. Again, with WLTP testing, the conditions are near-perfect, whereas in real life, you need to consider battery temperature and the constant speeds at which EVs operate.
