Toyota Corolla Cross GR-Sport: New Specs and Hybrid Tech

The Toyota Corolla Cross has been a runaway success since its 2021 debut, quickly becoming South Africa’s top-selling C-SUV. Now, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is dialling up the excitement with a significant spec change for the GR-Sport (GR-S) line-up, ensuring it remains the flagship of the range.

Available in 1.8-litre petrol or the Hybrid (HEV) guise, here's what's new in the Corolla Cross GR-S range.

The New Look

The updated GR-Sport adopts a design concept described as "Urban meets Sporty". The exterior features several updates that set it apart from the standard Xi, XS, and XR models.

  • Front Fascia: A dedicated GR-S black mesh grille and a sporty skid plate give it a more dynamic appearance.

  • Lighting: Sleek LED headlamps now feature sequential turn signals for a more premium look.

  • Side & Rear: New 18-inch machined-finish alloy wheels and black model name badges complement the Bi-Tone colour options, which include Glacier White, Chromium Silver, and Arizona Red—all paired with a black roof.

Interior

Inside, the GR-S cabin is a sea of black leather with striking red stitching. Exclusive touches include

  • GR Branding: The GR logo is embossed on the front seat headrests and the leather steering wheel.

  • Sporty Accents: Red seatbelts and aluminium sports pedals come standard.

  • Tech Upgrade: A new 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay now take centre stage.

Performance and Efficiency

The GR-S is available in two powertrains to suit different driving needs:

  • 1.8 Petrol: Delivering 103 kW and 173 Nm, this model now includes paddle shifters.

  • 1.8 HEV (Hybrid): Combining a petrol engine and electric motor for a total system output of 90 kW.

Both models benefit from GR-S suspension tuning, which provides a more spirited driving experience.

Safety and Convenience

The GR-S doesn't skimp on tech, featuring the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite, which includes a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and a Power Back Door with a kick sensor.

Pricing

Toyota has positioned the GR-S as the premium choice within the line-up:

  • 1.8 GR-S: R527 000

  • 1.8 HEV GR-S: R569 700

The package is rounded off with a 6-service / 90 000 km service plan and a 3-year / 100 000 km warranty. Hybrid buyers receive an 8-year/160 000 km battery warranty.

Verdict

With the Corolla Cross already accounting for 30% of its segment share, these updates to the GR-S flagship ensure that Toyota’s locally-built hero remains the one to beat in the South African urban lifestyle market.
