Is the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro good for new drivers?

The flagship Chery Tiggo 8 Pro brings the best that Chery can offer on the table. However, is the Tiggo 8 Pro good for new drivers? We'll find out here.

Buying a Car

Well-specified yet affordable is what comes to mind when one thinks of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro as luxury comes standard across this vehicle's range. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro can be considered Chery's flagship vehicle. My colleague Sean Nurse had one on test and you can read the review here.

The Tiggo 8 Pro comes with an award-winning  1.6-litre turbocharged engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. You'll see power figures of 145 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque. Not only do you have more than enough power, but you also get 7 seats as standard across the Tiggo 8 Pro range and the vehicle is capable of towing as well. Here are the top 3 things you need to know about the Tiggo 8 Pro.

The Size

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is a 7-seater SUV and the biggest SUV offered locally in Chery's range. Yes, this vehicle is quite sizeable although is ideal for the open road and city thanks to a few driver assistance systems like rear parking sensors and even a 360-degree camera on deck to make life easier when parking the vehicle. The electric power steering also makes the Tiggo 8 Pro easier to pilot too. Despite the size, the vehicle is fairly easy to pilot.

Performance and Efficiency

The award-winning 1.6-litre turbocharged engine has some poke to it and the vehicle is claimed to consume fuel at a rate of 7.0 L /100km which isn't bad for an SUV this size. If you opt for the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, however, you get a bigger 2.0-litre engine and a power bump to 187 kW and 390 Nm. For a new driver, even the 1.6-litre engine with 147 kW on tap can be a handful to handle. Especially considering the aforementioned size of the vehicle. Although there are safety systems to make life easier for the driver.

Price

The Tiggo 8 Pro is a relatively affordable SUV. However, for a new driver, we'd advise against looking at one as the initial purchase price can be considered as high. Maintenance costs for a new driver specifically can potentially be expensive even with a service plan and warranty in place.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro 1.6TGDI 290T Executive from R574 900*
Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max 2.0TGDI 390T Executive from R629 900*

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro comes with a standard 5-year / 150 000 km general warranty, a 10-year / 1-million km engine warranty, and a comprehensive 5-year / 60 000 km service plan. The Pro Max derivative gets a 7-year / 90 000 km service plan and the same warranty offering as the rest of the range.

Is it good for new drivers?

Even if you're able to afford a Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, we don't think it's good for new drivers. The SUV is big, the engine has more power than a new driver can generally handle and the purchase price and maintenance costs may be a big spend for some. We'd advise looking at a smaller vehicle with less power. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro would be better suited in the hands of a more experienced driver.
