Overview of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class
The newly launched V-Class, SA's most expensive new mini-van, is designed to accommodate up to eight passengers comfortably, making it an ideal choice for well-heeled families and glamorous group travel. It features a stylish interior with high-quality materials, advanced infotainment systems, and ample cargo space. The latest model, namely the V300d Exclusive at R2 267 768 is equipped with a powerful 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that delivers impressive performance while maintaining fuel efficiency.

Performance
We love the Mercedes-Benz V-Class for its performance on highways and open roads and it handles well under various driving conditions, providing a smooth ride even when fully loaded. However, its size can make manoeuvring in tight spaces challenging - thank goodness that the latest model is fitted with surround view cameras - as standard. Overall, it's really easy to drive, despite its voluminous dimensions.
The V300d has 176 kW and 500 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. This power makes it suitable for both city driving and long-distance travel.

Fuel efficiency
While the V-Class is not the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class, it performs reasonably well given its size. The V300d averages around 8.7 - 10 L/100 km, which is competitive for a luxury van. One 70-litre tank yields around 800 km, depending on how fast you drive and the weight on board.
Common issues
Being so full of electronics, there is just more that can go wrong in the V-Class, and there are a few common mechanical and electrical issues that potential buyers should consider.
Notable mechanical problems in previous models include front wheel bearing issues that may require dealer inspection. Electrical concerns often involve malfunctioning airbag lights and wiring problems in the steering column, which can lead to warning messages or unintended airbag deployment.
Additionally, some vehicles have been reported with missing spot welds that could affect safety, while others faced recalls for emissions-related software updates. Regular maintenance and attention to these issues are crucial for preventing potential problems with the V-Class.
Wind noise has also been highlighted as a concern during highway travel in previous models, but in my personal experience of the latest model, there wasn't much to speak of.
Maintenance and ownership costs
Owning a Mercedes-Benz V-Class comes with higher maintenance costs compared to standard vehicles, given that it's a luxury marque. German cars are just more expensive to fix and to service. However, many owners find that the features and performance justify these expenses. This opulent van is backed by a comprehensive warranty that includes a 5-year/100 000 km warranty and a 7-year 140 000 km maintenance plan, with service intervals every 25 000 km.
Workshop owner Adam Ford reports that the current and previous V-Class engines are not problematic, but he encourages owners to shorten the service intervals for best possible engine performance.
Resale value
The V-Class holds its value well in the South African market due to its reputation as a premium people mover. While initial purchase prices are high, owners can expect reasonable resale values when it comes time to sell.

So, is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class reliable?
The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is mostly a reliable choice for those seeking a luxurious and spacious van for the family or guests. While there were some issues in earlier models, its overall performance, comfort, and safety features make it a worthwhile option, and time will tell whether the new model will be susceptible to the same flaws.
With proper maintenance and care, the V-Class can serve as a dependable vehicle for years to come.
