Considering a Mercedes-Benz GLA but wondering if it's going to empty your pockets at the dealer's workshop in the long run? We take a look at previous and current-generation GLAs.

If you're considering a luxurious and compact SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLA might be on your radar. It's a stylish option that offers impressive tech and a comfortable ride. But when it comes to reliability, how does the GLA fare? Let's delve into what South African buyers should know.

Five reasons why the Mercedes-Benz GLA is good for families (2019)

South African release dates and reliability

The first-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA arrived in South Africa in 2014 (model year 2015). Reliability ratings for this generation are a mixed bag. While some owners report excellent experiences, there have been recalls for specific issues like window airbags and oil leaks in certain diesel models.

The first generation model landed in SA in 2014.

The good news is that the second-generation GLA, which hit South African shores in 2020 (model year 2021), seems to be a significant improvement.

Overseas, J.D. Power (USA) awarded the 2023 GLA a predicted reliability score of 80 out of 100, which is considered average.

However, What Car? in the UK placed the used 2023 GLA (model year 2024 in South Africa) in third place in their most reliable used family SUV category, boasting a score of 94.1%. This suggests that the GLA's reliability might be on the rise.

Things to consider

It's important to remember that these are just general ratings. Individual vehicle experiences can vary. Here are some additional factors to consider:

  • Model year: As mentioned, there's a difference in reliability between the first and second-generation GLA. Opting for a newer model year (2021 onwards) might be a safer bet.
  • Maintenance history: A well-maintained GLA is more likely to be reliable. Ask for the vehicle's service history before making a purchase.
  • Warranty: New Mercedes-Benz GLA models come with a 2-year/unlimited kilometre warranty

What do the local workshop owners say?

I spoke to my go-to technical guy, Adam Ford, who owns A&K Motors Automotive Service Centre in Sandton, and is a regular on Radio 702 (Word on Cars) and co-hosts the Buyer's Guide. He reckons that Mercedes-Benz GLAs are pretty reliable (both the diesel and petrol models) and has no specific issues to report.

Finding the right GLA for you

The Mercedes-Benz GLA can be a great choice, especially if you prioritise luxury and a comfortable ride. By considering the model year, maintenance history, and warranty, you can increase your chances of finding a reliable GLA. It's also wise to research common problems associated with specific model years before making your final decision.
