Which Mercedes-Benz GLA is better: diesel or petrol?

We compare the petrol motor in the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 with the diesel engine in the GLA 200d to find out which is better.

Automotive News

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is based on the new A-Class platform. The new model takes shape as a shorter but taller and wider offering when compared to the previous model. The new GLA, however, has big shoes to fill as Mercedes-Benz managed to sell over one million units globally. Under the bonnet of the GLA 200, features a 1.3-litre, turbocharged engine mated to a 7G-DCT (seven-speed, automated dual-clutch) transmission. In contrast, the GLA 200d is fitted with a 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel motor, coupled to the 8G-DCT (eight-speed, automated dual-clutch) transmission.

Comparison

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is currently offered in three trim levels, however, one petrol and one diesel motor are standard across the range. To accurately represent both engine variants, we will be comparing both performance and frugality. The figures presented below are as communicated to media and real-life driving conditions will reflect slightly different results.

  GLA200 (1.3-litre, turbocharged, petrol) GLA200d (2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel)
Power  120 kW 110 kW
Torque  250 N.m 320 N.m
0-100 km/h 8.7s 8.6s
Top speed 210 km/h 208 km/h
Fuel consumption 6.0L/100 km 5.1L/100 km
Fuel range 717 km 843 km
CO2 emissions 132 g/km 133 g/km

Verdict

Although the diesel motor produces slightly less power than the petrol engine, the diesel gains access to its maximum power and torque output earlier in the rev range. This results in a slightly quicker sprint to 100 km/h and more responsiveness from the accelerator pedal whilst at speed. Furthermore, the figures illustrate that the diesel variant is more frugal in that it consumes less fuel and thus provides more range. However, prospective buyers should take into consideration that the diesel variants come at a R34 520 premium compared to their petrol counterparts.

Although an immediate saving on the purchase price might appeal to prospective buyers, someone that regularly commutes over medium to long distances, or often travel might see the benefit in paying the premium and saving on the ownership cost in the long run. For me, the diesel option is the clear winner in this comparison.
