The dramatically improved second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA now looks like more than a hatchback on stilts, with a commanding driving position, premium interior and a design that is radically different from the other Mercedes-Benz compact models with which it shares underpinnings.

In today’s article, we compare the two engines available in the range to determine which is the most efficient. We have selected the AMG Line derivatives available with both the 1.3-litre petrol engine and the 2.0-litre turbodiesel.

Mercedes-Benz GLA200 AMG Line

Outputs: 120 kW and 250 Nm

Claimed Average Consumption: 6.0 L/100 km

Kerb weight: 1 491kg

The 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine available in the GLA200 is a unit co-developed with Renault which has proven to be a strong and efficient performer, particularly when combined with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Mercedes-Benz GLA200d AMG Line

Outputs: 110 kW and 320 Nm

Claimed Average Consumption: 5.1 L/100 km

Kerb weight: 1 620kg

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine in the GLA200d is impressive, providing a claimed fuel consumption figure of just 5.1L/100km while accelerating to 100km/h 0.1 seconds faster than the petrol model, with a time of 8.6 seconds. Its gearbox has an extra cog too, with 8 forward gear, making it even more adept on the freeway, where the engine revolutions are sure to be low, maximising efficiency.

Verdict

Having looked at the figures, it becomes clear that the turbodiesel-equipped GLA is superior to its petrol sibling, offering a quicker 0-100km/h time, better fuel efficiency and more torque, granting it the victory in today’s comparison.
