Choosing a model

In the spirit of frugality, we opted for a diesel model - the B40 Plus 2.0TDi City Hunter because it has considerably more bells and whistles for urban life. It's priced at R604 500; your diesel should get a bit further than petrol.

Please note that we decided not to opt for a balloon payment when we used our car finance calculator. Here's why.

Paying back your BAIC B40 Plus loan

Option 1: Zero deposit, no trade-in, pay over 72 months at 13.75% interest

R12 375 is your monthly instalment, the total interest paid is 286 528, and the total estimated repayment is around R891 028.

Option 2: Zero deposit, R350 000 trade-in, pay over 54 months at 13.75%

R6 347 is your monthly instalment, the total interest paid is R88 214, and your total estimated repayment is R342 714.

Option 3: R250 000 deposit, 0 trade-in, pay back over 60 months at prime rate (11.75%)

You'll pay R7 841 per month, your total interest is R115 957, and your total estimated repayment is R470 457.

Remember, the higher your deposit or trade-in and the shorter your repayment period, the less interest you will pay. So save, save, save instead and don't fall into the balloon payment trap.
