Although you won't have to search long to spot a GWM pickup in China, locally the Asian manufacturer is still expanding its footprint. The most recent addition to its arsenal is the GWM P Series pickup which comes in single- and double-cab configurations. While the single-cab model is more focused on commercial use, the double-cab variants have both a commercial derivative and one more applicable for those looking to purchase a pickup for their recreational and lifestyle duties.
The GWM P Series is not without competition locally as JAC recently introduced the stylish T8 and Mahindra released a Karoo edition of its S11 Pik Up model. The GWM and JAC are priced identically while the Mahindra, at the time of writing this article, carries an R2 100 premium. But which of the three provide the best value for money? Let us investigate.
Powertrain
Although all three of the models used in this comparison offer a 4-cylinder, diesel motor under the bonnet, there are differences in performance and frugality. Let's take a look at all three side-by-side.

Driver assists
While the JAC offer ABS brakes, the Mahindra adds Hill Descent Control as standard. The GWM P Series not only offer both these items but also Electronic Brake Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking. GWM drivers can also expect Hill-Start Assist, Traction Control and Stability Control as well as Cruise Control, the latter also fitted to the Mahindra.
The GWM further outshine the competition with 6 airbags installed as standard, opposed to the two offered by the Mahindra and JAC. For reversing safely, JAC and GWM included Rear Park Distance Control, however, all three models come fitted with a rearview camera, the GWM with an additional camera on the passenger side.
Price
As mentioned earlier, all three models are similarly priced. If you want the GWM P Series, you will have to part with R434 900 but that includes a 5-year / 100 000 km warranty and a 5-year / 100 000 km service plan. The JAC T8 will set you back the exact same amount as the GWM P Series but includes a 5-year / 150 000 km warranty and a 5-year / 60 000 km service plan.
The Mahindra Pick Up Karoo edition is the most premium by R2 100, costing R436 999. For this amount, Mahindra will include a 4-year / 120 000 km warranty and a 5-year / 90 000 km service plan.

Verdict
While the JAC T8 is certainly a looker, it still needs to obtain the trust from local buyers like Mahindra has done over its many years of being sold locally. However, GWM and Haval, both still very new in the country in the greater scheme of things, has made great progress in expanding their dealership network and product offerings and have subsequently attracted many new buyers.
The GWM P Series should continue to bolster that growth as after comparing all three models, it has the most to offer in terms of performance, safety and tech. It is in our books, the best value for money option in this comparison.
