Best fuel for a Steed
Introducing new pick-up models to the local market is no easy feat and yet the Chinese automaker GWM managed to do so with its Steed models. During the last quarter of 2014, GWM introduced its Steed 5E model which is built on the same foundations as the Steed 5 but offers a more premium facia and additional creature comforts.

The GWM Steed 5E is offered in two trim levels and with two engine options resulting in four derivatives. Entry-level variants are name SX whereas the higher-grade models receive an Xscape moniker. The latter features a touchscreen with SD card and AUX input as well as Bluetooth pairing. The Xscape models also see the standard fitment of a rollbar and side steps on the exterior.

The engines
While the entire Steed 5E range is serviced by manual transmissions, the petrol variants offer a 5-speed whereas the diesel derivatives provide for a 6-speed. The diesel motor takes shape as a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder unit while the petrol is offered in 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated guise.

Verdict
Whether you buy an entry-level SX variant or the flagship Xscape derivative, you cannot ignore the diesel model's performance advantage. With an additional 8 kW and 105 Nm of torque when compared to the petrol model, the diesel-powered Steed 5E should be able to handle more utilitarian tasks with more confidence and ease.
For those considering a bakkie for extended trips or even daily commuting, the diesel again trumps the petrol when comparing average fuel consumption, range per tank, and CO2 emissions. Now the GWM Steed 5E is no longer sold as a new vehicle, instead, the Chinese automaker offers the P-Series for serious bakkie buyers and then the normal Steed 5 as a budget-friendly option. You can, however, find used GWM Steed 5E models on AutoTrader here and if it was our money, we would opt for a diesel-powered model as it makes the strongest case for daily use and overall performance.
