The GWM Steed 6 was introduced locally in November 2014 and features at the top of the Chinese automaker's product line-up. The Steed 6 is offered in double-cab body style only and is aimed at consumers looking at a practical vehicle but want the modern safety features and conveniences.

The GWM Steed 6 is offered in two trim levels, SX and Xscape, the latter being the premium offering. While incorporating a variety of standard, one of the biggest drawing cards for the GWM Steed 6 range is its price. To list exactly what is on offer from GWM, we will be focussing on the flagship Xscape offering.
Safety
The Steed 6 Xscape incorporate a variety of safety equipment as standard including ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution while in the corners, the Bosch electronic stability program aims to keep all four wheels loaded with grip. Also featuring is hill-start assist and once you head down again, the hill descent control will keep the vehicle at a constant speed. Occupants also benefit from the 6 airbags for those unexpected emergencies.
Conveniences
Occupants are treated to full-leather upholstery, as well as a climate control system. For entertainment, GWM incorporated a four-speaker audio system compatible with radio, CD, MP3, Bluetooth connectivity and AUX/USB ports. The driver further benefits from the included electric driver seat adjustment, cruise control, auto lights/wiper and built-in tyre pressure monitor displayed on the multi-information display situated in the instrument cluster.
Motivation
Under the bonnet of the Steed 6 feature a 2-litre, turbocharged, diesel motor capable of 105 kW and 305 N.m of torque. The motor is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. On average, owners can expect a fuel range of 796 km from the 70-litre tank as it returns with an average fuel consumption figure of 8.8 L / 100 km.
Verdict
Priced at R319 900, the GWM Steed 6, 2.0VGT double cab Xscape model offers good value for money when compared to its closest competitors. And taking into consideration the level of standard equipment included in the Chinese offering, it is not far behind even more premium offerings in the LCV market. However, potential customers should always go and drive it for themselves to find out if it is the bakkie for them.
