Is the Mercedes-AMG G-Class a good car?
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the longest-standing model ranges in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. With the recent rise of performance SUVs, Mercedes-AMG has taken to creating a 'hot' version of the utilitarian machine, giving us the G63 as a result. Immensely popular with the well-heeled individual who is looking to make a statement, the G63 is revered for its class and capabilities.
Who is the Mercedes-AMG G-Class a good car for?
The Mercedes-AMG G63 is perfect for the experienced buyer that is looking for a blend of performance, space and rugged looks. A character that will possibly venture off road but does most of their talking on the highway.
Is the Mercedes-AMG G-Class a good first car?
The Mercedes-AMG G63 is not suitable as a first car. Even with the included safety systems and driver assistance systems, the size and power of the G63 exclude novice drivers and the inexperienced. It is best suited to experienced drivers with advanced driving training under their belt.
Is the Mercedes-AMG G-Class a good family car?
The Mercedes-AMG G63 makes a great family car. Three rows of seats accommodate up to 7 adults and luggage space is generous with 667-litres of cargo space and the ability to expand it to over 1 900-litres with the seats folded down.
Numerous safety systems ensure your passengers are safe with a complement of 7 airbags, ABS, EBA, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition. The G63 is a Euro NCAP 5-star vehicle.
Is there a Hybrid Mercedes-AMG G-Class?
There is no hybrid Mercedes-AMG G-Class, only the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol that develops 430 kW and 850 Nm torque. The most efficient Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the G400d 2.9-litre diesel.

What’s it like to drive?
The Mercedes-AMG G63 is a hoot to drive! The immense torque and power from the V8 engine will rocket you towards the horizon in an almost comical fashion, making burbling noises along the way. While nowhere near as nimble as some of its GL-Class counterparts, the G-Class will still corner with aplomb and surprise you as you exit the bends. Off the beaten path is where it shines though and off-road enthusiasts will revel in the traction and grip provided by the suspension.
Reviewer's opinion.
The G has excellent acceleration, handles superbly for a tanker and its massive AMG brakes can halt it securely. Its nine-speed automatic transmission is a joy and there’s also good feedback from the steering wheel making it comfortable for daily driving. However, it doesn’t have the greatest turning circle and you’ll feel it most when you need to park.

What is the Mercedes-AMG G-Class like inside?
The luxury appointments such as the widescreen infotainment, leather upholstery and connectivity are all offset by the boxy nature of the cabin with what seems like a plate-glass windscreen and butch grab handles for the passengers. No one can ever complain about a lack of space though.
Style
The G63 continues the body-on-frame design of its predecessors and remains true to its military heritage. The squared-off two-box design rides tall and the AMG version sports wide blister wheel arches and large alloy wheels. LED lighting, running boards and metallic paint complete the ensemble.
Tech features
- Multibeam LED headlights
- AMG Dynamic Select
- AMG Ride Control
- 3x Locking differentials
