Mercedes-Benz G-Class test drive: make sure to check these features out.
By Chad Lückhoff
We look at three of the top features in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class that should be noted when test driving one of these models.
The G-Class, or colloquially known as a G-Wagen (which is an abbreviation of Geländewagen, Cross-Country Vehicle), has been around for many, many moons. It's been in production so long that, aside from the Unimog, it's the oldest vehicle model in their lineup.
It's recently been refreshed and updated and aside from a few small items, is an all-new vehicle, up to date with modern standards yet retaining all the versatility and rugged dependability that the model is known for.
If you're headed out to go and test drive a new G-Class (and only the Mercedes-AMG G63 is available locally), be sure to check out these changes and updates.
Rack and Pinion steering
It sounds odd, I know, but rack and pinion steering is a new addition to the G-Class. The previous generation utilized a recirculating ball steering system mated to a beam front axle and both of these have been done away with in favour of the more modern tech. This means that there is an improved connection and communication between the steering wheel and the front wheels, allowing for improved steering feel and additional front end grip.
Widescreen Cockpit
Moving with the times, the new G-Class is equipped with Mercedes' latest 12.3-inch display cluster that rests in front of the driver. This gives you a digital platform to utilize and tweak to your own personal preferences, all while dishing out vital and necessary information. Three display options allow you to configure the dashboard to display the information you wish to see.
The three, individually lockable differentials.
While not a new feature, it is a feature that has made the G-Class rather unique. A boon for 4x4 and off-roading enthusiasts, the three individual diff locks allow for 100% lock-up at either axle and in the centre, with various combinations available as well. This will allow for better grip levels and torque distribution on loose and uneven surfaces.
