The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a new entry into the compact SUV segment. It combines Italian design flair with a high-tech interior and hybrid drivetrain to help it appeal to the masses looking for a statement piece. In something as slick and chick as the Tonale, you'd want the convenience of automatic shifting. For this reason, the Tonale is fitted with an auto-shifting 7-speed gearbox.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Drivetrain
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a hybrid powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 118 kW and 240 Nm. It's supplemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system allowing full-electric operation at low speeds and while cruising at a constant speed. This engine uses a variable geometry turbocharger to provide a broad spread of power throughout the rev range.
This power is sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed, dual-clutch gearbox which combines the best of both manual and automatic transmissions. While its internal operation is similar to that of a manual gearbox, you don't need to worry about shifting gears as the gearbox will do it on its own. What it does allow for is manual intervention, should you wish. Steering wheel-mounted paddles will allow you to select the gear you want if you feel like being more involved in the gear change process. But if you wish to cruise along, place the selector in Drive and let the car do the rest. As such, the Tonale only has two pedals; one for acceleration and one for brakes.
