Chery Tiggo 8 Pro
Powertrain and performance
Powering the Tiggo 8 Pro is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with outputs of 145Kw and 290Nm that is sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.0 L/100km and the 0-100km/h time is claimed at 8.9 seconds.

The Tiggo 8 Pro comes with LED headlights, a six-way electrically adjustable seat for the driver, ambient interior lighting, a wireless smartphone charger, a 12.3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen for climate control, digitised instrument cluster, climate control, cruise control, 6 Airbags, keyless entry and start, a surround-view and reverse camera.
Safety
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro received a 5-star safety rating from C-NCAP (Chinese New Car Assessment Programme).

Haval H6
Powertrain and performance
Powering the H6 is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 150kW and 320Nm that is sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.4 L/100km while the brand does not provide a claimed 0-100km/h time.
Standard equipment
The H6, in Luxury guise, comes with Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Lane-Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, a colour touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charger, 18-inch alloy wheels, 6 airbags, keyless entry/start, a panoramic roof, electrically adjustable driver's seat as well as front and rear PDC with a surround-view camera.
Safety
The H6 was crash tested by ANCAP in 2022 where it achieved a 5-Star rating.
Practicality
The Haval features seating for five, a 600-litre boot and 170mm of ground clearance, making it reasonably practical.

Mahindra Scorpio-N
Powertrain and performance
Powering the Scorpio-N is a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 129Kw and 400Nm that is sent through the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption and a 0-100km/h time are not provided by Mahindra.
Standard equipment
In Z8 specification, the Scorpio-N gets 18-inch alloy wheels, 6 airbags, climate control, keyless entry/start, a multifunction steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, artificial leather seats, a sunroof, rear PDC with a reverses camera and cruise control.
Safety
The Scorpio-N was crash tested by the Global New Car Assessment Programme GNCAP in 2022 where it achieved a 5-Star rating.
Practicality
The Scorpio-N boasts 7-seats, 460-litres of boot space and 187mm of ground clearance, making it very practical.
Price and value proposition
At R510 000 for the Z8 model, the Scorpio-N appears to offer great value for money.

Verdict
Looking at the figures, our trio are all fantastic value propositions, but there can only be one winner, and by virtue of its more frugal diesel powertrain, we are going to choose the Mahindra Scorpio-N.
