The BMW X2 was launched in April of 2024 and offers a coupe-esque version of the impressive BMW X1 with which it shares drivetrains, a platform and interior bits. Which X2 would we choose within the range, though? Let's compare the range and come to a decision.

BMW X2 sDrive18i M Sport: R 879 738*
The most attainable model, the sDrive18i, is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 115kW and 230Nm. The engine's power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Its claimed fuel consumption is 6.7 L/100km, and its 0-100 km/h time is 9.0 seconds.
In terms of specification, the sDrive18i comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, tyre pressure sensor, adaptive suspension, seven airbags, bucket seats, climate control, a digitised instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, keyless start, artificial leather seats, USB ports (front + rear), auto wipers/lights, LED headlights, fog lights and daytime running lights, and keyless entry/start, roof rails, electrically operated tailgate, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, and front and rear PDC with a reverse camera.
BMW X2 M35i: R 1 223 936*
As the performance model within the X2 range, the M35i is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 233kW and 400Nm. The engine's power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Its claimed fuel consumption is 7.8 L/100km, and its 0-100 km/h time is claimed at 5.4 seconds.
The M35i models match the sDrive18i models in terms of specification but come with model-specific 21-inch alloy wheels, gloss black exterior mirror housings, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning with lane keep assist. A 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan is standard across the X2 range.
So which one is the best?
When looking at the two X2 trim levels, it is clear that the two models appeal to a different market, in spite of being so similar in terms of specification. It would all come down to what you're looking for in your premium crossover, but for us, the sDrive18i is the model we would opt for.
