Looking back, the first generation X2 was a bit different, as it coined the term 'Sports Activity Coupe', mixing crossover SUV practicality, sports handling and coupé styling elements to form a compelling cocktail. The first generation X2 was based on a shared architecture platform shared with the MINI Countryman and X1. The X2 has now gone on to a second generation, and we had the chance to sample the vehicle in sDrive18i and M35i xDrive trim. Here are our thoughts.

Enter The new X2: Styling and Interior
General customers of the previous X2 sought a particular look, and now the latest X2 is even more distinctive, adopting the fastback styling similar to the X6, albeit in a more compact body. A mini version of the X6, if you will. In pictures, the vehicle looks big, but in the metal, it's a lot more compact. In this writer's eyes, the X2 is best appreciated in the metal. The dimensions here are similar to the X1, but the form factor of it all is different in that it is more saloon-like. The design features of the X2 are quite angular, but the silhouette is curvy. Body creases are pronounced with broad wheel arches. Exterior trim pieces like the hexagonal grille, rear diffuser and lighting stand out the most as some of those angular design elements. The M35i's rear apron houses the quad-tip exhaust. This vehicle comes with the standard M Sport Package, but you can option the M Sport Pro Package. The M Sport packages feature exterior styling elements such as wheels and exterior trim pieces. The options list extends with the M Sport Pro package in that you get the M High Gloss Shadowline exterior trim highlighting the rear spoiler, M Sport performance brakes, and interior treatment.
Inside, the X2 is noticeably a compact crossover SUV but doesn't feel claustrophobic inside. The BMW Curved Display and M Sport steering wheel take centre stage with a mono air vent just under the infotainment section of the display. Down the centre stack is a home for your smartphone with wireless charging. The device sits upright with a holder to keep your device in place. Behind the stack is a floating centre console housing the gear selector, drive and safety options. In sDrive18i trim, the seats on offer competent support and comfort, but the real star is the optional M Sport Seats in the M35i which in this writer's opinion, provided sublime comfort as well as support. In terms of boot space, you'll find 560 litres of capacity, which can be extended to 1470 litres when folding the rear seats. BMW's new 'BMW Operating System 9' is used for the X2's infotainment. Based on an Android platform, this system allows for a more extensive range of products and services. Naturally, this system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system is responsive and was easy to connect to with a smartphone. There will be BMW Digital Packages to expand your infotainment experience further.
The Drive: sDrive18i
Powering the sDrive18i is a 1.5 litre 3 cylinder petrol turbocharged engine churning out 115kW and 230Nm. In this instance, power is sent to the front wheels via a 7 speed Steptronic Dual Clutch transmission. Compared to the habanero-infused M35i, the sDrive18i has a perky powertrain with some personality to it. It's pleasant to rev out the 3-cylinder engine, and the Steptronic transmission has snappy changes. Even with the optional 20-inch wheels, ride comfort is compliant on the road and on soft offroad. Handling is poised, with the X2 having an element of chuckablity thanks to its more diminutive stature.
The Drive: M35i xDrive
Over here, we have a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine firing out 233kW and 400Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via the same 7 speed Steptronic Dual Clutch transmission. Darty but linear power delivery and an added sound show when in Sports mode are what the M35i offers. The exhaust note can have a slight drone in the cabin at cruising speed when in Sport mode, but it can be mitigated by changing the drive mode. The wheels are one inch larger than the sDrive18i, we have M Sport Performance brakes and we have adaptive M Sport suspension as well. The limits are higher than those of the sDrive18i in terms of handling, but the sports tuning doesn't sacrifice ride comfort. The M35i is well-sorted in the handling department with stopping power to match too with a confident pedal feel. The vehicle strikes a nice balance between power and handling and on a first-impression basis.

Verdict
The latest X2 may be considered an acquired taste to some, but the formula is refined, and its accoutrements are good. The sDrive18i is nice if you're not looking for something potent like the M35i but still has sporty elements. Meanwhile, the M35i is fun to drive, and the M Sport seats are a gem.
