Which BMW X2 is better: diesel or petrol?

Deciding between a diesel BMW X2 and a petrol-powered one is a tough call. They both present compelling arguments both for and against.

Buying a Car

The BMW X2 is a bit like Marmite, either you love it or you hate it. If you're in the former camp you're probably under the age of 35 and looking for something exciting and different. If you're older than 35, good on you! You're still looking for something fun and stylish.

If you're in the market for a BMW X2 then you have 5 models to choose from. You have three petrol models and two diesel models available to you, although there is only a singular diesel engine, just with a choice of drive.

The BMW X2 20d is available as an sDrive or xDrive model with the latter being the All-Wheel-Drive option. The sDrive model is a front-wheel-drive design as the X2 is based on BMWs UKL front-wheel-drive architecture with a transverse engine layout, as used in vehicles such as the X1, 2 Series Active Tourer and several MINI models.

Trim Levels

As is the norm for a vehicle from the BMW stable, you have a myriad of options at your disposal. Depending on your affordability, you could have almost every option under the sun fitted to the cheapest, X2 sDrive18i model and end up with more equipment than the average X2 M35i.

The only major variation between the trim levels is the standard fitment of LED headlights on the X2 M35i model which is an optional extra on the others.

Engines

The smallest engine in the range is the petrol-powered 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder B38A15M1 engine that features in the X2 sDrive18i. This is followed by the petrol 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder B48A20M0 in the X2 sDrive20i. Both of these engines are only available in a front-wheel-drive format, BMW's sDrive. The most powerful petrol engine in the range is the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder found in the X2 M35i. This model is only available with xDrive AWD.

The sole diesel offering is the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder B47C20O0 engine in the X2 20d which is available with both s- and xDrive.

Fuel Economy

Performance comes at a price and the BMW X2 with the worst fuel consumption is naturally the X2 M35i with its 225 kW and 450 Nm turbocharged engine. The diesel models fare considerably better but it's worth noting that the manufacturer claims from BMW seldom reflect the real world figures and will vary by some extent. These figures do, however, provide you with an insight into how they fare against each other.

The table below shows their claimed fuel consumption on the combined cycle that includes a mix of urban and highway driving, measured in l/100km. The range is on the standard 51-litre fuel tank where a larger, 61-litre fuel tank is an optional extra, measures in Km.

  BMW X2 sDrive18i BMW X2 sDrive20i BMW X2 sDrive20d BMW X2 xDrive20d BMW X2 M35i
Fuel Consumption 6.3 6.0 4.9 5.0 7.4
Range 810 850 1041 1020 689

Verdict

The pick of the litter here seems to be the BMW X2 sDrive20d. It may not have the outright performance of the M35i but for daily living and keeping costs down, you're not going to beat it. It has the best fuel consumption and range and yet still manages to deliver an impressive 140 kW and 400 Nm, which should prove ideal for overtaking and long, enthusiastic highway adventures.
