What is the difference between trade and retail values?
There's quite a substantial difference between trade- and retail values, with trade being significantly lower than the retail value (as much as 20% lower, in most cases). This is mainly due to the fact that there's a mark-up for dealers built into the retail value – buying cheap and selling dear, as it were. Of course, these values are somewhat arbitrary and can be influenced by the popularity of your specific car in the second-hand trade, as well as a car's reputation among pre-owned dealers. - Martin Pretorius, AutoTrader.

What affects the value of your Jeep Wrangler?
A variety of factors affect value, so let's take a look at the obvious ones first:
- The model year. The newer the car, the higher the price.
- The car's condition: The better the state of the car, the higher the price. Additionally, a complete service history raises value too.
- Features: Additional features can also affect value, but it is not always a given that a car with more features will cost more than one with fewer features.
- Location: Cars in high-demand areas frequently cost more than those in low-demand areas.
- Demand: Cars with high demand typically fetch a higher price than those with low demand.
Two years ago, the Jeep Wrangler Sahara 3.6 Unlimited sold for R 839 900, jump forward, and the same model now sells for R 729 900 on average. If you do the math that works out to a depreciation of 13% over two years.
Do Jeep Wrangler models hold their value?
The Wrangler Sahara models retain around 82% of their value after two years if we compare pre-owned 2022 models to the used list price in 2024. This could come down to a variety of factors:
- Competitive pricing: The Wrangler is an enthusiast vehicle
- Demand: There is a lower demand for the Wrangler overall
- Supply: Since it is an enthusiast's vehicle, there are not that many for sale in the country.
- Practicality: The Wrangler may be less desirable than its more city-based SUVs
