They may dig holes in the garden and chew up your furniture, but we love our dogs unconditionally. Taking them out on walks and with you when you go out is part of the ownership experience but how do we best cater for their travelling needs?

While they may like the thought of travelling on the back of a bakkie, this isn't the safest way for them to travel. It's best to being them into the car and secure them with a harness and seatbelt clip. While it may not protect them in the event of an accident, they will not fall forward and into the footwell when you brake and restricting their access to the front means that you can concentrate on driving.
Are SUVs good for dog owners?
SUVs are probably the second-best solution when looking to transport your furry friends. While an estate has a lower ride height and makes it easier for dogs to climb in and out of, an SUV does the job just as well.
The high roofline and generous rear space will help prevent your dog from feeling claustrophobic and will better suit large breeds. Ingress and egress are a little more difficult for smaller breeds and they will need assistance getting in and out.
The large tailgate in most SUVs will swing out of the way making access to the rear of the vehicle easier than it would be in other vehicles and considerably easier than trying to get them through a back door.
Most SUVs and crossovers will allow you to drop the rear seats forward, creating even more space for your four-pawed friend and this has the added benefit of protecting your upholstery. Great for when you're heading back from a muddy walk or if your woofs are prone to shedding.
Accessories
Consult your dealership to find out what sort of accessories they have available that can make transporting or travelling with your dogs more convenient. Many manufacturers understand that dogs owners will buy SUVs for this very reason and may offer accessories such as washable floor mats, cabin dividers and even step systems to help your dog get into the rear.
