Are Opels safe cars?

We look at the current Opel model lineup offered locally to see what standard safety equipment can be found onboard and which models offer the most in the way of safety, both active and passive.

Buying a Car

Motor vehicles are inherently dangerous. The human body wasn't designed to travel by car and wasn't created to withstand the forces that act upon it, especially in the event of a motor vehicle accident. Safety in the car should be your number one priority. Selecting a vehicle that helps protect you is critical to your well-being.

Modern safety systems have helped reduce the number of deaths caused by road accidents but this is continuously countered by the number of additional vehicles that enter our roads every year. Supplementary restraint systems, collision avoidance features and early warning systems are all designed to either help avoid accidents or lessen the chances of incurring injury in the event of an accident.

We've taken a look at the current Opel range and gone through their safety statistics and features to help you work out if Opels are safe or not. Below you'll find a sample of some of the features that contribute to the vehicle's safety rating.

Opel Corsa

The Opel Corsa is the smallest car in the Opel lineup but this B-segment hatchback is not shy on specification. You'll get no fewer than 6 airbags across the range along with Antilock Brakes (ABS) with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). The Corsa range comes with traction control (TCS), Electronic Skid Program (ESP), and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Lane Keep Assist stops you from veering into the path of oncoming traffic. The Corsa has ISOFIX mountings in the outer rear seats.

The Corsa has a 4-star Euro NCAP rating.

Opel Crossland

The Crossland is Opel's crossover SUV that takes your motoring to a higher level, literally. The increased ground clearance and raised seating position give you a better view of the road but you won't have to worry about the safety side of things as it too is equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBA and EBD, TCS, ESC, HSA. There are ISOFIX mounting at the rear for compatible child seats. Land Departure Warning is standard across all variants.

The Crossland scores a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

Opel Combo

The Opel Combo is available as both a cargo van and as a Multi-Person Vehicle (MPV). The cargo models have less safety equipment as much of this would be wasted on inanimate cargo, but the Combo Life MPV has a respectable complement. The Cargo gets 2 airbags, ABS with EBD but no EBA. The Life version gets 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and EBA, TCS, and ESC. Only the LIfe has ISOFIX mountings in the rear.

The Opel Combo Life scores a 4-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

Opel Grandland X

The Opel Grandland is the largest local offering. This mid-size crossover SUV is the flagship model for the range and the safety systems support that claim. The Grandland X is fitted with a complement of 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and EBA, TCS, ESP, HSA and Lane Departure Warning with assist. There are ISOFIX mountings in the rear and the Grandland X has a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
