We take a look at the current range of Opel vehicles and find the most affordable model from the German automaker.

​If you have kept your eyes on the news recently, you would have seen some of the exciting products being unveiled by Opel. However, the brand not only caters for those ready to pay top tier monies for a vehicle but also have a few models that will appeal to those looking for something more affordable. 

Opel offers a variety of products in different segments from hatchbacks to a more utilitarian panel van and people carrier model. We take a closer look at the current range and find out which is the most affordable Opel you can buy.

Opel Corsa

One of the most recent additions to the Opel line-up is the new Corsa model. The small hatchback is offered in three derivatives, two of which is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol motor coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. This combination is capable of delivering 55 kW and 118 Nm of torque and promises a frugal fuel consumption figure of 5.8 L / 100 km.

The third and top-of-the-range model takes shape as the Opel Corsa Elegance. This variant comes with a 1.2-litre, turbocharged, 3-cylinder petrol engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Customers can expect 96 kW and 230 Nm of torque from the hatchback as well as an average fuel consumption figure of around 6.3 L / 100 km.

Opel Crossland

If you are considering a crossover for that added space and ride height, the Opel Crossland might just be what you are looking for. Like with the Corsa model, the Crossland is offered in three derivatives, this time, however, only the entry-level model comes fitted with a naturally aspirated powertrain.

The Opel Crossland 1.2 Edition comes with a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The model is capable of 55 kW and 118 Nm of torque and claims an average fuel consumption return of 5.1 L / 100 km. Both the Crossland 1.2T Edition and Crossland 1.2T Elegance comes fitted with a 1.2-litre, turbocharged, 3-cylinder petrol engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination develops 81 kW and 205 Nm of torque and promises an average fuel consumption return of 6.2 L / 100 km.

Opel Grandland X

For those looking for a vehicle that offers even more space and ground clearance, the Grandland X range might be what you are looking for. The SUV comes in three trim levels, the base model, Edition and Elegance with the latter being the flagship offering. All three variants are powered by a 1.6-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder petrol engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic. Thus, all three derivatives develop 121 kW and 240 Nm of torque and are claimed to return an average fuel consumption return of 7.0 L / 100 km.

Opel Combo

For those looking for a larger family or business vehicle, Opel offers the Combo range. The model comes in three derivatives with the Life taking shape as a people carrier and two Cargo variants, one being standard length and the other a long-wheel-base iteration. All three of the versatile vehicles are motivated by a 1.6-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel motor which develops 68 kW and 230 Nm of torque. 

All three derivatives send their power to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. The larger long-wheel-base Cargo and five-seater Life variants return a respectable average fuel consumption figure of 5.0 L / 100 km while the lighter standard Cargo promises 4.8 L / 100 km.

Verdict

As shown above, the Opel Corsa in the base specification is the cheapest Opel you can purchase as new from an official dealership. The Corsa will set you back R 284 900, around R 15 000 less than the better-specified Edition trim at the time of writing this article. If the pricing on a new model is still out of reach, why not consider a used Opel Corsa model on AutoTrader.
