Top 5 extras to consider for your new Mercedes-Benz GLS

If you're shopping in this segment of the market, what's another couple of hundred-thousand spent on additional comfort or tech features? We pick our top five available packages and add-ons for the gargantuan GLS.

Automotive News

For the purpose of this exercise, we selected the Mercedes-benz GLS 400d 4Matic, which is the most affordable model, at R 1 854 840. The GLS 400d 4Matic AMG Line costs R1 928 140, while the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 4Matic AMG Line will cost you R 2 118 460. The priciest model is the GLS 580 4Matic AMG Line, at R2 118 460.

When visiting the GLS microsite, bear in mind that the configurator may suggest that something is available at no extra cost, but once you select it, it will tell you that you can't pick this option without also picking the other pricey option. This makes the configurator quite misleading and relatively confusing, unfortunately...but that's how most of the premium brands' configurators work.

The good news, however, is that the GLS has an extensive list of standard features and Mercedes-Benz allows you a decent amount of options that are actually free. For example, you can choose between at least three no-cost options for a leather interior trim /colour scheme combination, before you start paying for things like full Nappa leather.

Herewith my top 5 extras:

1. Dynamic Driving pack, R150 000

Consisting of Merc's Off-Road Engineering Package and the brand's legendary E-Active Body Control, you can't ask for more driving comfort and surefootedness both on and off-road, as the all-wheel drive system works with the low-range transmission for "dynamic progress on surfaced roads and finely-metered torque distribution off the beaten track". It also includes underbody protection for your GLS's most vulnerable bits.

2. Sporty engine sound, R11 300

Nobody inside the cabin needs to know you're driving a quiet diesel and not a fire-breathing V8, reckons Mercedes-Benz:

"The sporty engine sound enhances driving pleasure without being obtrusive for other road users. The sound of the engine which is heard in the interior is reinforced via the sound system when accelerating in a sporty drive program. Your vehicle thus shows its sporty side at the press of a button, while also retaining a level of elegant restraint."

3. Technology Pack, R 130 000

What does R130k buy you? Everything you need and more, and whether you'll end up using all of it, only you will know. So here is what is included in this package:

A Burmester surround sound system, a temperature-controlled cup holder, the MBUX Interior Assistant (like Siri or Alexa for your phone, this assistant is the AI for your Mercedes-Benz), aluminium-look, illuminated running boards with rubber studs, power closing doors, wireless charging for mobile devices in  the front, the Keyless-Go comfort package, and AMG Line trim.

4. Rear Comfort Package Plus, R 34 600

If you select this 'Plus' package, the Rear Comfort Package also gets thrown in, making the 2nd row of the GLS feel like first class. Features include the removable MBUX rear tablet, wireless charging for mobile devices in the rear, luxury rear head restraints, side airbags, and additional USB ports.

5. Exclusive Seating Pack, R135 000

'In for a penny, in for a pound', the old adage goes. Got another R135k to burn? Then why not opt for this seating pack, which includes the following: Everything in the above-mentioned Rear Comfort Package Plus, as well as THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control in the rear, temperature-controlled cup holders for rear passengers, multi-contour front seats, and seat heating for the 3rd row of seats.

Pretend you've just won the Lotto / received the tender of your dreams, and configure your very own Mercedes-Benz GLS here.
