Mercedes-Benz’s GLS model is a huge seven-seater SUV. First launched as the GL-Class to compete with the Audi Q7 in 2007, the GL’s second-generation was introduced in Europe in late 2012, featuring revised styling and a new range of engines.
In 2016 the GL was re-named the GLS, in line with Mercedes’ policy of naming all the SUVs in their range in line with the model hierarchy in the sedans.
Thus a GLA is the smallest SUV and the GLS is the largest, with a range of sizes in between following this new nomenclature formula.
The GLS was available here until recently with a number of engine options, including a V6 turbodiesel in the GLS350d, a turbocharged petrol 4,7-litre V8 in the GLS500 and a 5,4-litre petrol turbo V8 in the Mercedes-AMG GLS63.
This year the range has been reduced to just one model, the GLS400d, which uses the new turbocharged straight-six diesel measuring 2 925 cc and producing an impressive 243 KW and 700 Nm of torque.
An all-new Mercedes-Benz GLS is expected to arrive here in the first quarter of 2020.
Topping up the screen washer bottle
The only maintenance chore you can do on this engine under the bonnet (unless your earlier-model GL’s warranty has already lapsed) is to top up the windscreen washer bottle. A warning light will warn you of the fact that the bottle needs topping up.
All other fluid top-ups, including oil and coolant for the engine-cooling system, are normally required to be carried out by your friendly Mercedes-Benz dealer.
Where do I find the GLS screen washer bottle?
- Looking at the engine bay from the front of the car, with the bonnet open, the screen washer bottle is located at the right-hand front corner of the engine compartment.
- It is the only fluid container that is topped by a blue plastic top.
- The cap also has a logo on it, illustrating a screen with water droplets.
Filling the bottle
- The washer bottle cap flips open easily via a tab on the cap.
- You can use your thumb to do this.
- The cap is then retained and prevented from falling down into the engine bay by a tab that wraps around the neck of the bottle.
- There is no high-pressure system in the bottle, so you can simply top it up with clean, clear water until you can see that the water level is near the top.
- Once it is full, clip the top back in place, and then check the screen washer works by activating the button on the windscreen wiper stalk.
- It’s a good thing to check this before going on a long trip, where you are likely to encounter bug-splatter out on the highway, as well as changeable weather.
