Mahindra’s new bakkie goes production-ready and is headed to SA!
Remember the striking Mahindra Global Pik Up concept revealed right here in Cape Town back in August 2023? Mahindra & Mahindra has officially taken the wraps off its production-bound successor, christened the Mahindra Lifestyler for international markets (and the Scorpio Lifestyler for India).
Set to hit showroom floors by April 2027, this new-generation midsize bakkie is engineered with South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and the Middle Eastern markets in mind.
Designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai and engineered at the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai, the Lifestyler is built on the brand's new body-on-frame architecture.
It is said to bridge the gap between utility and leisure—what Mahindra calls balancing "payload and playload."Marketing lingo aside, let's look at some of the vehicle highlights:
Architecture: Next-gen, high-strength body-on-frame platform.
Segment: Midsize lifestyle bakkie segment.
Global target markets: South Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Launch timeline: Scheduled for release by April 2027.
Three variations
To demonstrate the versatility of the new platform, Mahindra unveiled three launch editions, each tailored to a different lifestyle:
Valley Edition: Finished in Artemis Grey, this trim focuses on commercial and leisure applications.
Reef Edition: Draped in Aquareef, this variant targets outdoor enthusiasts with a nod toward coastal exploration and freedom.
Trail Edition: Wrapped in Sahara Beige, the Trail Edition emphasises off-road capability.
What it means for South Africa
Given South Africa’s appetite for lifestyle bakkies and Mahindra's local footprint, the Mahindra Lifestyler will enter a fiercely competitive market upon its arrival by April 2027. By combining off-road credentials with improved safety standards, tech, and improved cabin aesthetics, Mahindra aims to offer a value-packed alternative in the dual-cab bakkie space.
