Is the Hyundai Venue an SUV?

How much of an SUV is the Hyundai Venue, and is it one at all? We take a look at this top-selling Korean vehicle to find out if it can wear the sports utility badge with honour.

The appeal of SUVs for urban life and beyond is understandable. Many people nowadays prefer a bit of ground clearance over a low-slung hatch or sedan, as it's just less complicated to live with. Getting in and out is easier, you won't throw out your back installing a car seat, and having a good vantage point in traffic are all pros of compact SUV ownership.

The Hyundai Venue is what we refer to as a compact crossover, although many people would call it an SUV, due to its raised ride height and SUV styling elements, like roof rails and skid plates.

The N Line model was recently added and replaces the Glide derivative in the Venue lineup.

The Hyundai Venue is based on the Hyundai i20 which is a hatchback, but the Venue's ground clearance is 19.5 cm. It is front-wheel driven, and it rides well on gravel and dirt if the road is in good condition, but anything rougher than that is a no-no. These types of compact crossovers are not meant for going bundu-bashing with.

Most compact, all-wheel-drive SUV models, such as certain variants of the Suzuki Vitara for example, aren't equipped to deal with advanced off-roading. Ideally, you would need an SUV or bakkie with a low-range transfer case if you want to do serious four-by-four activities. If you want a small SUV that can drive up or down the side of a mountain, you're better off in a Suzuki Jimny which is a full-fledged 4x4.

The latest incarnation of Venue features this stylish new digital display.

The bestselling compact crossover in South Africa for 2022 at present, is the Toyota Urban Cruiser, with the VW T-Cross in second place, and the Hyundai Venue in third.

The Venue in N Line trim features red accents and faux leather seats.
