The first-generation Compass debuted in 2007 and was a commercial success, prompting Jeep to create an improved product to secure future sales. Production of the first generation ceased in 2016 to make way for the current Compass which was introduced overseas in 2016.

The latest model, codenamed MP/552 is built on the FCA SCCS platform (Small Common Components and Systems platform) Small Wide 4x4 LWB, making it the only model to use this extended version of the Jeep Renegade’s underpinnings. - Sean Nurse, AutoTrader.

Is the Jeep Compass a good car?

Who is the Jeep Compass a good car for?

The Jeep Compass is a good car for singles, couples, families, or just people in general who like the great outdoors, or need a practical vehicle to fit in with their lifestyle.

Is the Jeep Compass a good first car?

It's very good, but one has to keep in mind that running and maintenance costs have the potential to be costly. From a safety perspective, it's an excellent car for new drivers. It's also a rather affordable used buy if you don't mind an older model, so be sure to purchase a decent service/maintenance plan as well so you're not left with a massive repair bill.

Jeep has created a relatively spacious, family-friendly interior and the Compass's safety rating makes it ideal for families.

What’s it like to drive?

Check out our review on the previous-generation Compass:

The drive is admittedly a bit stiff and takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you’re past the initial difference, it’s a change fairly easily embraced. The 2014 Jeep Sport edition of the Compass features a 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder engine (158HP) and is available across the board as a 5-speed manual with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. While more responsive and anchored than the previous instalment, one may argue that the automatic gearing doesn’t quite get the most out of the engine, especially with the Limited’s 2.4 litre, 4-cylinder engine (172HP). That aside, it is capable of off-road escapades with “Freedom Drive” technology providing on-demand full-on 4X4 capability.
