Electric cars and load shedding: is your EV battery safe?
As load shedding rears its head again, we have a look at the implications of load shedding when it comes to you current, or future electric vehicle's (EV's) all important battery pack.
Some 70 percent of respondents to AutoTrader’s 2021 South African EV Buyers Survey said they were likely or very likely to consider purchasing electric cars in the future. But with load shedding the norm in South Africa, will the voltage spikes that often occur when the electricity is switched back on damage these EV batteries?
How do I keep my electric car battery healthy?
“Any voltage spike or energy fluctuation significant enough to damage an electric Jaguar I-Pace will be suppressed by multiple layers of safety precautions, regardless of the type of charger used,” Jaguar South Africa told us.
Can I leave my EV plugged in all the time?
The firm says that just like the “unplugging of domestic electronic devices such as televisions”, this decision is “entirely at the discretion of the user”. That said, the company assures us there’s “no need to unplug a Jaguar I-Pace as a load shedding precaution”.
