BYD looks to disrupt luxury SUV segment with the new ATTO 8

In a move signalling a sharp escalation of its South African ambitions, BYD has officially pulled the covers off its latest flagship, the ATTO 8. The world's biggest electric vehicle (EV) is positioning this seven-seat SUV as a direct challenger to the established order, blending long-range hybrid efficiency with strong performance figures.

A tale of two powertrains

The ATTO 8 debuts with a dual-offering strategy.

  • Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Engine Specs

The hybrid lineup utilises a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with dual electric motors.

    • Premium Edition (DM-i):

      • Engine Output: The 1.5L turbo engine produces 110kW and 220Nm of torque.

      • Electric Motor: Features a front motor with 200kW and 315Nm.

      • Combined Range: Offers a total driving range of up to 728km.

    • Performance Edition (DM-p):

      • Output: Delivers a total combined maximum power of 359kW.

      • All-Wheel Drive: Features dual motors (front and rear), each providing 200kW.

      • Acceleration: Capable of reaching 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

    • Hybrid Battery Charging: The PHEV variants utilize a 35.6 kWh LFP battery.

    • On-Board Charging: Supports single-phase AC charging (11kW) and is compatible with 7kW wall chargers.

    • Features: The system includes scheduled charging to optimize energy costs and cooperative regenerative braking (CRBS) to recover energy during deceleration.

    • Hardware: The charging port features a multi-colour light to indicate status and is located behind an electric-opening cover.

To ensure the longevity of these high-tech batteries, BYD recommends using AC charging at least once a week and keeping the state of charge (SOC) between 40-60% during long-term storage.

Interior and space

Beyond the raw numbers, the ATTO 8 is a masterclass in packaging. Its 2 950mm wheelbase allows for a cavernous interior that BYD describes as a "mobile living space," featuring a seven-seat layout that can be reconfigured to offer up to 1 960 litres of cargo capacity.

The boot space with all seats in place

The cabin is anchored by a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment display and a 21-speaker high-fidelity audio system. Safety includes the DiPilot 300 suite offering Level 2+ driver assistance supported by laser-based sensing.

Pricing

BYD is entering the ring with a competitive pricing structure aimed at the heart of the luxury SUV market.

ATTO 8 Premium: R1 059 900

ATTO 8 Performance: R1 259,900

BYD includes a 5-year/100 000km warranty and maintenance plan as standard. The high-voltage battery is further protected by an 8-year/200 000km warranty, guaranteeing at least 70% capacity over that period.

Verdict

With its impressive range, good perceived quality, practicality, and brisk acceleration, the ATTO 8 seems to be a solid offering, although I'll reserve my judgment until the road test.
