BYD Sealion 5 Ushers in Affordable Plug-in Hybrid Power

BYD has launched the Sealion 5 compact crossover, the country's most affordable Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). I attended the national media launch recently.

Automotive News3 min read

Chinese automaker BYD has made an aggressive play in the compact crossover segment, appearing to set its sights firmly on the likes of the Toyota Corolla Cross with its Sealion 5, touted as SA's cheapest plug-in hybrid!

BYD expansion

At the media event, BYD committed itself to the South African market for the long term, announcing plans to expand its 18 dealerships nationwide to 30 outlets by the end of 2026. This expansion is being matched by significant infrastructure investment, with a target of rolling out between 200 and 300 public charging points nationwide.

Drivetrain

The Sealion 5 is built on BYD’s DM-i (Dual-Mode Intelligent) Hybrid Platform. The model features a 12.96 kWh Blade Battery with a claimed 52 km WLTP pure electric driving range. The model can be charged at home with a 3.5 kW wall box, which is included in the launch purchase price.

There's also a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 72kW and 122Nm, which combines with the electric motor (145kW/300Nm) for a maximum system power of 156 kW. This setup delivers a claimed range of over 1 000 km, with power being sent to the front wheels via a CVT.

Interior

Inside, you get keyless entry and start, plus the DiLink ecosystem accessed via a large 12.8-inch screen. The system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Safety

Safety as Standard: Both the Comfort and Dynamic models receive asuite of safety features, including Driver & front passenger Airbags (x2), front side airbags (x2), and full side safety air curtains. The intelligent driver aids are extensive:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA)

  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD)

V2L

Perhaps the most compelling feature for South Africans is the standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. The Sealion 5 can act as a giant portable power bank, allowing you to plug in household appliances during load-shedding.

Driving impression

I only drove the car for around 15km at the launch event, but a few standouts include how soft and supple the seats in both the front and rear of the vehicle car, the impressive rear occupant space and the general quality of the materials inside, it feels very well made for the asking price. The drivetrain has a very reasonable amount of poke, but you will have to contend with the associated CVT drone when accelerating hard, and I would need more time to see if the brand's lofty claims of over 1 000km of range is possible.

Comfort vs. Dynamic: Which one is right for you?

With the starting price of the Comfort model at  R499 900, it offers great value. The R70 000 difference for the Dynamic model brings in a stack of  features.

For the family buyer who values maximum convenience, the Dynamic model offers a compelling case for the upgrade. The 360-degree camera, electric tailgate, and heated/ventilated seats are high-end features that elevate the daily experience.

Verdict

The Sealion 5 is BYD's most competitive passenger car product yet, offering space, features, efficiency and good quality at a very impressive price point. It’s a clear sign that the era of affordable plug-in hybrid mobility has arrived in South Africa.
