Brake fade is a temporary reduction or complete loss of braking effectiveness caused by excessive heat buildup in a vehicle's braking system. It most commonly occurs during prolonged or repeated heavy braking, such as on steep descents, during towing, or in motorsport conditions. Understanding its types, recognising its symptoms, and knowing how it is evaluated are essential for road safety.

Types of Brake Fade

1. Friction (pad) fade

The most common type. When temperatures rise beyond a brake pad's rated threshold, the friction material breaks down and releases gases. These gases form a thin layer between the pad and rotor, drastically reducing friction and stopping power.

2. Fluid fade (vapour lock)

Heat transfers through the calliper into the brake fluid, causing it to boil and form compressible gas bubbles within the hydraulic lines. Because gas cannot transmit pressure the way liquid does, pedal input fails to reach the callipers effectively, leading to a dangerously soft or sinking pedal.

3. Green fade

This occurs with brand-new, un-bedded brake pads. Surface resins on fresh pads release gas when first heated, temporarily reducing braking performance until the pads are properly cured.

4. Mechanical fade

Associated with heat-induced physical damage, such as warped rotors or seizing callipers, which compromise consistent contact between braking surfaces.

Common symptoms to monitor

- Increased stopping distance: The vehicle requires noticeably more distance to come to a full stop.
- Soft or spongy pedal: A hallmark of fluid fade; the pedal sinks toward the floor with reduced resistance.
- Burning smell: A sharp chemical or scorched odour coming from the wheel area signals overheating components.
- Pedal travel increase: The pedal must be pressed further than usual before the braking responds.
- Vibration or pulsation: Felt through the pedal or steering wheel, often indicating warped rotors.
- Discoloured rotors: Blue or purple-tinted rotors visible through the wheel suggest sustained extreme heat.

How brake fade is evaluated and tested

  1. Controlled stop tests involve driving at moderate speed and applying firm, consistent braking pressure to observe changes in pedal feel, response time, and stopping distance across repeated stops.
  2. Temperature monitoring uses an infrared thermometer on rotors and callipers after successive stops to confirm whether heat has reached dangerous levels.
  3. Component inspection checks for worn or glazed pads, warped rotors, and brake fluid that appears dark or contaminated, a sign that its boiling point has been compromised by moisture absorption.
  4. Professional track testing simulates real-world high-load scenarios through multiple successive hard stops in quick succession. Engineers measure braking force, stopping distance, and deceleration rates to map performance degradation over time.

Brake fade is preventable through regular fluid changes, proper bedding-in of new pads, and sound driving technique, but recognising it early is what keeps drivers safe when prevention falls short.
