BMW Group South Africa Charges Into 2026 with Record Market Share and Local Production Milestones
At its 2026 Start-of-Year Media Update, BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) unveiled some impressive numbers. Despite a volatile economy and the rising tide of affordable imports, the group has solidified its position as the bedrock of the local premium automotive sector.
Led by CEO Peter van Binsbergen and Plant Rosslyn Director Danny Bester, the update highlighted a year of record-breaking statistics and awards, along with a clear-eyed strategy to navigate consumers' migration toward new market entrants.
Market Presence
BMW SA’s performance in 2025 was impressive. The brand achieved its highest-ever local premium segment share at 46.15%. When combined with MINI’s 5.67% share, the Group now controls over 51% of the premium market.
BMW Motorrad: Maintained a 39.3% share of the >251cc motorcycle segment.
Mini: Showcased a 26% share in the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) segment, signalling strong interest in electrified urban mobility.
Global Recognition: South Africa was ranked among the Top 5 growth markets for BMW globally, specifically noted as the fastest-growing market for the high-performance M Brand.
Plant Rosslyn
For over five decades, Plant Rosslyn has been the heart of BMW’s local operations. In 2025, the facility operated on a full three-shift schedule to produce over 79 000 vehicles—primarily the fourth-generation BMW X3.
| Economic Impact Pillar | Metric |
| Export Value | R270-billion |
| Direct Jobs | 24 000 |
| Indirect Jobs (suppliers) | 71 500 |
| Total auto industry contribution | 500 000 jobs across SA |
Plant Director Danny Bester emphasised that "true production"—rather than just Semi-Knocked-Down (SKD) assembly—is vital for job creation. He noted that while local manufacturing is "maxed out," the speed of government decision-making remains a concern compared to competitors like Morocco.

The Road Ahead: 2026 Product Roadmap
The "Neue Klasse" represents the next chapter for BMW, a new vehicle range encompassing over 40 models globally. In South Africa, the immediate future is packed with high-profile launches:
BMW iX3: Scheduled for arrival in the second half of 2026, bringing the first series-produced Neue Klasse tech to local shores.
New BMW X5: Arriving by the end of 2026.
Updated 7 Series: Slated for a year-end 2026 debut.
Mini: Following the 2025 refresh, 2026 will see new JCW (John Cooper Works) additions across the Aceman, Countryman, and Cabriolet lines.
BMW Motorrad: The highly anticipated F 450 GS is coming to SA, with allocations reportedly moving fast.
Policy and Skills
The Group addressed the migration of the premium segment toward Chinese imports. The Group advocates for a measured approach to taxation on imports to protect local manufacturing, emphasising that the APDP (Automotive Production and Development Programme) requirements must be strictly upheld.
To combat the shortage of technical skills, BMW SA maintains a "cradle to career" development path, including an early learning centre at the Rosslyn plant for employees' children and extensive STEM support for local schools.
"Our 2025 performance reflects consistency across the business," said CEO Peter van Binsbergen. "From record segment leadership to award-winning products, we are positioned to compete effectively while continuing to invest in South Africa’s future." he added.
