The new variant, which is built at the Rosslyn plant, joins the existing X3 20d, X3 30e (PHEV), and the performance-oriented X3 M50 xDrive models. Its introduction aims to capture the value-conscious customer while still delivering the X3’s now-signature monolithic design and premium experience.

Engine

Positioned as the petrol alternative alongside the diesel 20d, the X3 20 Pure Design features a modern 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Crucially, this unit is aided by 48V mild-hybrid technology, enhancing both efficiency and initial torque delivery. The technical output is rated at 148kW and 335Nm of torque. Top speed is listed at 218km/h, with BMW reporting an average fuel consumption figure of 7.5 L/100km.

Pricing and Standard Features

The new entry model carries a starting price of R1 107 760.40 (inclusive of VAT and CO₂ tax). While competitively priced, the X3 20 Pure Design builds upon the existing BMW X3 xLine specification. Standard exterior enhancements include the distinctive BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille, 19-inch wheels fitted with run-flat tyres, and satin-finished aluminium accents.

The interior features electrically adjustable sport seats upholstered in either black or espresso brown Veganza synthetic leather. Technological integration is handled via the curved touchscreen, which runs BMW Operating System 9. There's also a panoramic glass roof, Harman/Kardon surround sound, wireless charging, and the inclusion of key driver assistance systems, such as Park Assist and Driving Assist. Boot space remains at  570 to 1 700 litres, and there's also a fully electrically operated tow hitch. The BMW X3 20 Pure Design is now available to order at South African dealerships.
