BAIC BJ40 Pro turns heads at Guangzhou Auto Show

BAIC arrived in South Africa with ambitious plans, establishing a vehicle assembly facility in the Coega Special Economic Zone near Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). This facility, costing BAIC and South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), around the R11 billion mark, was relatively quiet until the recent introduction of the B30 range.

The BAIC B30, which is assembled in the large factory, might be joined by a few new ranges soon. Here is what they are and what you can expect from the BAIC automaker in the near future. BAIC at 2025 Auto Guangzhou Show

Held between November 21 and 30, 2025, Auto Guangzhou featured a large group of OEMs displaying some of their latest models, as well as concept cars. One such OEM was, of course, BAIC. During the show, BAIC unveiled what it refers to as the "ELMT MAX", a concept model that represents the future of the off-roading division of the Chinese automaker.

BAIC did, however, invite the public to submit their suggestions for the model name when a production version is ready to launch to the public. But more than just the concept model, BIAC showcased a new model destined for South African roads, the BJ40 Pro.

BAIC BJ40 (B40) Pro Exterior

While the BJ40 or B40 name is familiar in the local motoring landscape, the Chinese automaker has introduced a brand-new model that shares that moniker, however, with 'Pro' added to the end. While the final model name is yet to be confirmed, based on historic strategies, we can assume that it will be called the B40 Pro. This model takes shape as a more traditional yet rugged SUV; however, it retains familiar themes, such as the grille and headlamp design, which are similar to those of other models in the BAIC range, especially the BJ60, which serves as its primary design inspiration. 

The front features automatic LED headlights and taillights with high-beam assist, as well as LED Daytime Running Lights. On the sides, customers can expect 17-inch alloy wheels as standard; however, 18-inch units are available as an optional upgrade. Another interesting design element is the frameless door windows, adding to the overall premium design and feel. At the rear, customers can expect a split tailgate with the glass folding up and the door itself, fitted with the spare wheel, opening to the right. 

BAIC BJ40 (B40) Pro Interior

Step inside the BJ40 and you will quickly take note of the large screens everywhere. In front of the driver, it features a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster. In the centre, there is a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and next to it, you will find an additional 12.8-inch passenger display. In the front, occupants can expect one Type-C USB port and two USB-A ports, while the rear occupants benefit from one Type-C port and one USB-A port.

Also impressive is the 50W built-in wireless charger, which likely means wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; however, this has yet to be confirmed. As for the audio, the infotainment system sends audio to 10 speakers as well as one subwoofer and a built-in amplifier. But future customers will be able to opt for an Infinity sound system.

The cabin features premium leather finishes on the multifunctional steering wheel, as well as on soft-touch areas of the dashboard and door cards. However, as standard, the seats are upholstered with a microfibre fabric. The driver benefits from an 8-way electric seat adjustment, while the front passenger can expect a 6-way electric adjustable seat. 

Both front seats come standard with heating and ventilation, as well as 4-way electric lumbar support. At night, the interior is bathed in multicoloured ambient lighting as well. Although we had very little time behind the wheel, the interior fit and finish seemed promising, even when navigating some off-roading obstacles. 

BAIC BJ40 (B40) Pro Engines

While local derivatives are yet to be confirmed, what we do know is that this model comes with three drivetrain options in some international markets. These include a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a diesel motor with the same displacement and aspiration. Then there is the EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle), which combines a 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol motor with an electric motor, resulting in increased driving range through more frugal fuel consumption and full electric propulsion. 

The local specifications may differ; however, the global specifications feature a petrol engine that produces 180kW and 386Nm, transmitted through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels via a part-time all-wheel-drive system. The diesel powers the same drivetrain configuration, except the motor delivers 120kW and 390Nm of torque. 

The BAIC BJ40e Pro EREV experiences a significant performance boost, delivering 403 kW and 655Nm. In addition to the increased performance, which provides a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5.5 seconds, owners will also benefit from a claimed 152 km of pure electric range from the 40.3 kWh ternary lithium battery, as well as a claimed total combined range of over 1 200 km.

Driving the BAIC BJ40 (B40) Pro

During our visit to Guangzhou, we had the opportunity to sample the BAIC BJ40 (B40) Pro in both EREV and turbo-diesel guises. While the driving experience was very limited, from what we could gather on the short off-road course, it was apparent that in both derivatives, the torque and power were more than ample for the light off-roading.

The throttle response is rather sensitive; however, that could have been a result of the drive mode set by the course instructor. As for the suspension, it was very compliant over even more rugged terrain and yet felt capable off-road. The interior fitment also seemed reasonable, as almost no rattles or squeaks were noticed during axle-twisting or driving over uneven dirt roads. 

Verdict 

Although we spent limited time with the anticipated model, it provided a promising experience. Once the model is introduced locally, which is not yet confirmed but expected to be around the late second quarter of 2026, we will have a better understanding of how it performs in local driving conditions. 

However, considering the capable competition emerging with the GWM Tank 300, Jetour T1 and T2, or even the highly anticipated new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, pricing, after-sales support, and competitive warranties and service/maintenance plans will be key to its success in the local market. However, with all the included comfort and safety technology, as well as its attractive design, we look forward to its arrival very much.
