The cheapest time to buy a motorcycle

Much of the sport of cycling, the stock availability and price of motorcycles change depending on the time of year that you choose to buy. These are the best times of the year to go shopping for your next two-wheeled purchase.

There is an old saying that states that the best time to buy a bike was yesterday. Owning a motorcycle opens doors you never knew were closed, but you may be surprised to know that there is a perfect time to buy a bike when the price and demand are low.

It makes perfect sense that there are times in the year when riding a motorcycle is not preferable, and riders sell them off, or when bikes are generally easier to buy for various other reasons. The weather naturally plays a huge role, but unlike Northern countries that are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, the weather in South Africa is much more palatable, and we can ride year-round. Still, even a temperate climate can affect when bikes are cheaper to buy.

The cheapest time: Winter

The best time to secure the lowest price is during the heart of the South African winter, generally from June through August.

Why winter is cheaper in SA

  • Decreased demand: Even in areas with mild winters, people generally ride less in June and July due to colder mornings, rain, and shorter daylight hours. This reduced demand gives buyers more bargaining power.

  • Dealer stock clearance (Year-End Push): While many new models arrive globally in the Northern Hemisphere fall (August/September), South African dealers still operate on similar yearly inventory cycles. The most significant price drops often occur:

    • At the end of the calendar year (November/December): This is the push to meet yearly sales targets and clear out the previous model year's new stock.

    • During the official winter months (June-August): Dealers are motivated to move inventory when floor traffic is naturally low, and they frequently offer promotions or "Winter Specials."

  • Private seller motivation: Private sellers may be more willing to accept a lower price to get the bike off their hands before the peak cold/rainy season or to free up cash/storage space.

Other Key Buying Opportunities

Beyond the winter months, look for deals during these times

OpportunityTime FrameWhy It's a Good Deal
New Model ArrivalLate Year (Oct-Dec)When new model years (e.g., the 2026 models) are announced or arrive, dealers aggressively discount the current model year's remaining stock (e.g., 2025 bikes).
Black Friday SalesEnd of NovemberBlack Friday has become a significant retail event in South Africa, and many major dealerships offer substantial promotions on new and used bikes, gear, and accessories.
End of the Month/QuarterLast Few DaysDealership sales staff often have monthly or quarterly targets to meet. Negotiating on the last day of the month or a quarter can increase your chances of a better discount.
Bike Expos/RalliesSeasonalLarge motorcycle events often feature special pricing, finance deals, or added value (free gear, service plans) from manufacturers and dealers.

Summary for the cheapest time to buy

  1. For a used bike (Best Bargain): June and July, during the South African winter, offer the lowest demand and the most motivated private sellers.

  2. For a new, current model bike (Biggest Discount): November and December, when dealerships clear out floor stock to make room for the following year's models and meet year-end quotas.
