Meet the truck that drove to the moon. Eight times!
If trucks could talk, some would tell wild stories – tales of long nights on lonely roads, of deliveries made and of border posts crossed with the driver’s patience wearing thinner than a worn-out tyre. But every so often, a truck comes along with a story so extraordinary that even seasoned drivers have to sit up and listen.
Meet Europe’s “moon truck”.
No, it hasn’t actually been to space. It hasn’t rolled across lunar dust either. But, in terms of pure distance travelled, this veteran truck has clocked up the equivalent of driving to the moon eight times.
That’s 3,266,208 kilometres on the clock – yes, more than three-point-two million – and counting.
MAN of the moment
This remarkable machine, a 2008 MAN TGX 18.360, was recently crowned the winner of the MAN Truck Max Mileage Master 2025 competition in Europe. Its discovery caused quite a stir. After all, most trucks retire long before they reach such science-fiction levels of mileage. But this one is still going strong, still hauling freight, and still proving that some vehicles are made of sterner stuff than we give them credit for.
The truck belongs to Helmut Heckmann’s Osthavelland Transport GmbH, which has owned it from kilometre one. From the very beginning, the TGX was put to work in classic long-distance operations –operated by two drivers who alternate behind the wheel. That relentless schedule, combined with responsible maintenance and a crew who know how to treat a truck well, helped the vehicle accumulate a distance most of us can barely wrap our heads around.
For context:
– The distance from Earth to the Moon is about 384,400km.
– This truck has covered just over eight times that.
– In earthly terms, that’s more than 80 trips around the equator.
Going the distance
As part of the European competition, more than 70 MAN truck owners entered their high-mileage heroes, all built in 2007 or later. Many had already crossed the one-million-kilometre mark. Collectively, the entries added up to over 75 million kilometres – about 100 return trips to the Moon, or 1,800 laps around the planet.
But one truck stood above the rest, keeping going long after many trucks have moved into the big truckyard in the sky. The drivers say the key to its longevity has been simple: proper maintenance, sensible handling, and a machine that was well engineered in the first place.
"I was curious to know whether there are other companies that keep their trucks in service for so long. Thanks to good quality, good maintenance and good staff, damage can be avoided. The trucks are reliable on the road," explains Helmut Heckmann, who, as the winner of the competition, can now look forward to an exclusive experience with the new MAN eTGX: a personal cross-country tour to the Alps, ProfiDrive eTruck training, a factory tour in Munich and a high-quality merchandising package await the mileage champion.
The local story
Now, while Europe has found its mileage monarch, a new question arises: who will wear the crown in Southern Africa?
Because the very same Max Mileage Master competition has now been launched in South Africa, and entries are expected to reveal some serious long-distance heroes. Anyone familiar with local or regional haulage knows that trucks here don’t live easy lives. They face everything from sweltering heat to steep climbs, rough rural stretches, night-time long hauls, and plenty of border crossings. If anywhere is going to produce trucks with odometers rolling toward astronomical numbers, it’s this region.
Operators across South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia have been invited to submit their high-mileage MAN vehicles – anything built from 2007 onward. And while no one yet knows who will take the title, transport insiders are already trading guesses. Some swear they know of units approaching the three-million-kilometre mark. Others whisper about vehicles that have quietly clocked up enormous distances without drawing attention.
Which truck will become the local Mileage Master?
One thing is certain: the winning vehicle will have a story worth telling – about the drivers who kept it moving, the mechanics who kept it alive, and the countless roads it has worn down with unwavering persistence.
For now, Europe’s moon truck holds the crown, but Southern Africa’s contenders may have a surprise or two up their sleeves. Could there be a truck that has driven the equivalent of ten trips to the Moon?
