When it comes to the competitive 90kW tractor segment, few match-ups attract as much attention as the New Holland T5.120 and the Fendt 312. Both machines target mixed and livestock farms, offering enough muscle for fieldwork while remaining agile for loader duties. However, as you will find out below, their approaches to achieving a noteworthy balance could hardly be more different.

Engines and Power Delivery

Under the bonnet, the two tractors take notably different paths. The Fendt 312 is powered by a 4.4-litre Agco Power four-cylinder engine producing around 92kW, while the New Holland T5.120 relies on a smaller 3.4-litre Fiat-built four-cylinder delivering 87kW. On paper, the difference is marginal, but in practice, the Fendt’s larger displacement gives it a smoother, more refined character.

At idle, the Fendt’s engine is quieter and less coarse than the New Holland’s, which testers described as “lumpier.” Both tractors handled a four-furrow plough comfortably during field trials, but the New Holland occasionally pulled ahead on longer runs when revs were kept high. However, it was more prone to faltering when engine speeds dropped below 1,400 rpm, demanding more attentive gear management from the operator. The Fendt, by contrast, maintained consistent power delivery thanks to its advanced transmission system.

Transmission and Field Performance

The most significant difference between the two tractors lies in how that power is transmitted to the ground. The Fendt 312 features the brand’s hallmark Vario continuously variable transmission (CVT), renowned for its smoothness and adaptability. Testers found it intuitive and responsive, allowing the tractor to automatically adjust to load and terrain changes with minimal operator input.

The New Holland’s 16x16 Electro Command semi-powershift system, while simpler and more traditional, performed better than expected. Gear changes via the push-button control were crisp, though the ergonomics of the range splitter drew some criticism from taller operators. In heavy going, the Fendt’s Vario system proved superior, effortlessly adjusting speed and torque without losing momentum. At the same time, the New Holland demanded a bit more manual finesse to stay in the sweet spot.

Cab and Operator Comfort

Operator comfort is where the Fendt really shows its premium credentials. Its cab is light, spacious, and exceptionally well finished—more akin to what you’d expect from a larger, more expensive tractor. Visibility is excellent, and the controls are logically laid out, reducing fatigue during long working days.

The New Holland’s cab, while functional, feels smaller and less refined. Entry and exit are a bit awkward, and the materials don’t quite match Fendt’s polish. Yet, it redeems itself with excellent ergonomics for loader work. The joystick is ideally positioned on the right armrest, providing the operator with fine control and easy access to the gear shift buttons. In fact, for loader operations, the New Holland was judged the more comfortable and intuitive machine to use.

Hydraulics and Practical Features

The Fendt’s hydraulic system delivers an impressive 110 litres per minute, comfortably outpacing the New Holland’s 84 litres. This gives the Fendt an edge in hydraulic-demanding applications such as baling or heavy loader work. Rear lift capacities are comparable, with the Fendt just under 6 tonnes and the New Holland slightly less, both of which are sufficient for typical implements in this power range.

Weight is another factor worth noting. The New Holland tips the scales at around 4,550kg, making it lighter and nimbler in tight yards. The Fendt, weighing about 4,970kg, feels more planted on the road and in the field but less agile in confined spaces.

Final thoughts

Both tractors are excellent examples of what their brands do best. The New Holland T5.120 embodies affordability, simplicity, and practicality, making it an ideal choice for loader work, yard tasks, and mixed farming. Its engine has plenty of punch, its controls are well thought out, and its price makes it accessible to a broader range of farms.

The Fendt 312, meanwhile, represents refinement and technology. It’s quieter, smoother, and more relaxing to operate.
