While one 7.5kWh module is enough to charge a tractor for a full day of field work, that same unit can alternatively provide clean, reliable power to five local homes, lighting up schools and refrigeration units for the first time.
2. Breaking the Hardpan Barrier
Standard farming in many tropical regions is often a battle against "hardpan" - a layer of soil so compacted by years of heavy rain and traditional tilling that roots and water simply cannot penetrate it. The Aftrak tractor is specifically engineered to overcome this through a partnership with the Malawian NGO Tiyeni. Using a specialised chain-trenching device, the tractor performs Deep Bed Farming (DBF), slicing 400mm into the earth. This mechanical advantage does the work of dozens of manual labourers in a fraction of the time, allowing water to soak deep into the ground. The result is a dramatic transformation of the landscape, with crop yields doubling or even tripling in a single season.

Because the tractor is self-propelled and lightweight, it removes the gruelling physical toll usually required for land preparation, making mechanised farming accessible to women, the elderly, and farmers with disabilities. This shift doesn't just grow more food; it grows more wealth. Early trials in Malawi’s Mzamu village suggest that the combination of higher yields and lower energy costs can increase a farmer's revenue by up to 12 times. This creates a virtuous cycle in which the profit from the harvest allows the community to invest in the solar microgrid, powering everything from mobile charging stations to maternity clinics.

The world has taken notice of this British-born innovation. In 2024, Aftrak was awarded the prestigious $1 million Milken-Motsepe Prize in Green Energy, recognising its potential to scale rapidly across the continent. With mass production moving from the UK to a new manufacturing hub in Blantyre, Malawi, the project is transitioning from a successful experiment into a localised industry.
