We were very interested to see how the new options have changed the drive and feel of this multi-purpose vehicle, as we had previously had a Trend LWB as a long-term test unit. Our test mule arrived, and we were immediately impressed with the changes, but how would it compare?

Ford Tourneo Custom styling
Nothing can make a van look anything other than what it is. The vast slab-sided design and square dimensions are hard to conceal, but Ford has made the Titanium spec look good. Up front, you will find Matrix LED headlights flanking a large trapezoidal grille. Down the side, distinctive 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and privacy glass windows give it a sporty look. The Tourneo badging on the rear tailgate is in satin black, tying in nicely with the stacked LED tailight clusters.
Our test unit came in a fantastic Grey Matter colour scheme. The five other colour options are Frozen White, Magnetic Black, Blue Metallic, Agate Black Metallic, and Moondust Silver.
What's the Ford Tourneo Custom like to drive?
The new independent rear suspension is a significant improvement, providing a composed and comfortable ride quality compared to its predecessor, which helps to disguise its commercial van origins. This becomes all too evident if one urges the van into a corner. You will begin to feel the weight as the straight-line surefootedness disappears and the wallowly nature becomes apparent. It doesn't go around the corner so much as take large bites out of it.
That being said, you should not attempt corners at speeds that would upset the attitude of this type of vehicle, mostly to keep those in the passenger bay happy.
Ford Tourneo Custom performance
Under the Tourneo's short bonnet, a 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel engine is mated to a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. The combination produces 125kW and 390Nm, higher than the base model's 100kW/360Nm. Power goes to the front wheels. The Tourneo will lope to a limited top speed of 180km/h and does the 0-100 sprint in a scant 12 seconds, impressive for a vehicle of its size.
Ford Tourneo Custom space and comfort
The main idea behind a vehicle like the Tourneo is space and comfort for all inside, and the Titanium X does not fail to deliver. It has an 8-seat configuration, offering vast interior space for all eight occupants, with generous legroom. Even with all seats in place, the luggage area remains generous. A significant highlight is the new track-mounted seating system for the second and third rows, allowing seats to be easily slid, rotated, or completely removed. The seats are also designed to be lighter for easier handling. A lower floor height and integrated side steps make ingress/egress and loading easier. The reduced overall height (under two metres) is a practical benefit.
The Titanium X spec is the luxury offering in the range; thus, it has generous standard equipment. You can enter right or left through the dual electric sliding doors and are greeted by plush artificial leather seats. The front and second-row outboard seats are heated, and the cabin feels light and airy.
Regarding technology, the big 13.0-inch central touchscreen runs Ford's SYNC4 infotainment system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and powers a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen (B&O) audio system. The driver gets a large 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster, and everyone can charge a device due to the generous number of USB charging ports spread around the cabin.
Ford Tourneo Custom Safety
Ford has ensured that the Tourneo is as safe as possible, equipping it with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems as standard. The Ford Co-Pilot 360 system is a level 2 ADAS with numerous features to keep you and your passengers safe. The system includes the following:
Passive Safety Features
Airbags: The Tourneo features nine airbags, including one between the front passengers for added protection in a side impact.
ISOFIX/i-Size Child Seat Anchor Points: Includes multiple anchor points for secure installation of child seats.
Seatbelt Reminder System for all front and rear seats
Active Safety and Driver Assistance Systems
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) / Pre-Collision Assist: Can detect potential collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists ahead, warning and automatically applying the brakes if the driver doesn't react in time.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop-and-Go and Lane Centring: This feature maintains a pre-set distance from the vehicle ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic, and helps keep the car centred in its lane.
Lane Keeping Aid/Assist with Departure Warning: This feature provides gentle steering support to help prevent the vehicle from unintentionally drifting out of its lane.
Blind Spot Monitoring/Assist (BLIS): Warns of vehicles in the blind spots and may apply resistive steering torque if the driver attempts to change lanes while an object is detected.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with Reverse Brake Assist: Warns of approaching traffic when reversing and can automatically apply the brakes if a potential collision with a vehicle or pedestrian is detected.
360-Degree Camera System: Provides a bird's-eye view to aid parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces.
Exit Warning System: Uses sensors to detect approaching traffic (like cyclists or cars) from the rear when a door is opened, alerting occupants to help prevent accidents.
Traffic Sign Recognition: Can read speed limit signs and work with the Adaptive Cruise Control to adjust the vehicle's set speed.
Intelligent Speed Assist
Intersection Assist
Post-Collision Braking: Applies the brakes after an initial impact to help reduce the risk of a secondary collision.
Ford Tourneo Custom Fuel Consumption
Ford claims the Tourneo in Titanium X trim should return 7.4 L/100km. On our combined cycle testing, which included freeway, traffic, and day-to-day school runs, we returned 9.1 L/100km at its heaviest, seeing a drop to 8.1L/100km in Eco mode. The Tourneo has an 80-litre fuel tank, which costs R 1700 to fill with diesel. At the consumption rate during the test, we returned just under 1000km.

The Verdict
The Ford Tourneo Custom 2.0SiT Titanium X can be praised for its immense practicality, high flexibility, and spacious interior, and it has a significant upgrade in technology and comfort over its predecessor. The Titanium X trim adds genuine luxury touches, positioning it as a serious alternative to more expensive rivals. It may seem wallowly while cornering, which subtly presents itself despite the refined ride. If you are looking for a feature-packed, luxurious, and supremely versatile 8-seater that offers excellent value compared to premium European rivals, the Titanium X is a strong contender.
