The more proactive amongst you will ask the petrol station attendants to check the fluids on occasion. While there's nothing wrong with this, they will usually only check your coolant level and your oil level, seldom will they inspect your windscreen washer fluid.
The washer fluid is still an important part of your vehicle's functionality. While there is no damage to the engine or mechanical components should you run out, it forms part of the safety system of your vehicle, allowing you to clear the windscreen so that you can see the road better.

If your windscreen washer fluid is depleted, you can fill it yourself and there's no need to enlist professional help. Here's how you can top up the windscreen washer on your Fiat 500.
You will need:
- Windscreen washer fluid (although fresh water with a few drops of dishwashing soap will also work)
- Gloves (if you would like to keep your hands clean)
- A soft cloth or paper towels (to clean up any spill)
How to:
1. Locate the bonnet release catch and pull it to open the bonnet.
2. Open the bonnet and secure it with the stay.
3. Locate the windscreen washer bottle. It's a blue cap situated behind the driver's side headlight.
4. Open the cap.
5. Add the washer fluid or water. You can fill this to approx 2cm from the opening.
6. Replace the cap and mop up any spillage.
7. Unlatch the bonnet stay and secure.
8. Close the bonnet and ensure that it is closed securely.
9. Test the system.
